COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team fell, 1-0, at Maryland Saturday night at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. With the road loss, the Buckeyes fall to 7-6-4 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten competition, while Maryland improves to 10-5-2 and 4-2-1 in conference action.
Maryland scored the lone goal of the contest in the 75th minute when George Campbell netted a score on a close-range shot following a corner kick. Senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov had a valiant effort in front of net for the Scarlet and Gray with six saves, but falls to 7-6-4 in 2014. With seconds left on the clock, the Buckeyes had two shots inside the MD keeper box, but both attempts were blocked as time expired to give the Terrapins their seventh-consecutive win of the season.
The first half of play went scoreless. Maryland controlled possession for the majority of the half, but the Buckeye defense held its own against the Terrapins. Ivanov made his first of the three opening-half saves in the 10th minute, corralling a skipped shot in front of net. Maryland earned three-consecutive corners in the 24th minute of play, but Ohio State denied each of them to keep it scoreless. The Buckeyes tried to go on the counterattack but a through ball pass to sophomore forward Danny Jensen was cleared away out of danger.
In the second half, Jensen and sophomore back Austin Bergstrom had two shots on goal, but were stopped by Maryland keeper Zach Steffen. Kyle Culbertson sent a low entry off a corner kick in the 72nd minute, but Steffen was in position from the near post to clear it away. Overall shots were 13-4 in favor of the Terrapins, while Maryland held a 10-4 lead in penalty corners.
The Buckeyes will conclude the 2014 regular season at Michigan at 7:30 p.m. ET Nov. 5 in Ann Arbor.
