COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s gymnast Michael Newburger was named the College Gymnastics Association Gymnast of the Week, the organization announced Thursday. The national award marks the first CGA weekly honor for the redshirt senior and co-captain, who also collected his first career Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award earlier this week.
The defending national champion and two-time All-American on pommel horse, Newburger set a new NCAA record on that event Saturday night at the Windy City Invitational, scoring a career-high and Ohio State record 16.250 on the event during the sixth and final rotation to lead the Buckeyes’ to a second-place tie with Illinois. The previous NCAA record (16.000) was originally set by Daniel Ribeiro (Illinois) in 2009.
The Buckeyes return to action Sunday, Jan. 26 at Illinois in the first of two Big Ten regular season dual meets. The meet is slated to start at 2 p.m. ET and will broadcast on BTN on delay.
