COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michael Newburger, a redshirt senior and co-captain on the No. 4 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team, has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. The award marks the first Big Ten weekly honor for the Austin, Texas, native.
The defending national champion and two-time All-American on pommel horse, Newburger set a new NCAA record on that event Saturday night at the Windy City Invitational, scoring a career-high and Ohio State record 16.250 on the event during the sixth and final rotation to lead the No. 4 Buckeyes’ to a second-place tie with No. 5 Illinois. The previous NCAA record (16.000) was originally set by Daniel Ribeiro (Illinois) in 2009.
The Buckeyes return to action Sunday, Jan. 26 at Illinois in the first of two Big Ten regular season dual meets. The meet is slated to start at 2 p.m. ET and will broadcast on BTN on delay.
