Buckeyes Head to Lexington for Kentucky Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s track and field team hits the road for the first time this season this Friday, Jan. 17, for the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky. The Friday-Saturday meet is hosted by the University of Kentucky at Nutter Field House.
The weight throw and Distance Medley will be contested on Friday beginning at 5:00 p.m. ET. All other events are scheduled for Saturday afternoon starting at 9:00 a.m. ET. Live results are available at www.ukathletics.com.
Sykes Named B1G Track Athlete of the Week
Senior Chesna Sykes was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week Monday by the conference office.
Sykes, a Columbus native, placed first in both the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash this past Friday at the Buckeye Classic. Her time of 7.35 in the 60-meter dash is currently tied for third best in the country. She won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.93.
It marks the first Big Ten weekly award for Sykes, who is a three-time All-Big Ten performer and three-time All-American.
Buckeyes Ranked No. 61 in USTFCCCA Preseason Poll
Ohio State is ranked No. 61 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason rankings, released Jan. 13.
Five Big Ten teams are ranked in the Top 50: No. 13 Michigan, No. 17 Purdue, No. 31 Illinois, No. 37 Penn State and No. 44 Wisconsin.
Texas is the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, followed by second-ranked Texas A&M and No. 3 Florida.
Buckeyes in the Individual Top 25
Nine members of the women’s track and field team find themselves ranked within the Top 25 in several event areas nationally according to Track & Field Results Reporting System (www.TFRRS.org). A look at where the Buckeyes sit:
• Chesna Sykes – No. 3 in the 60m and No. 22 in the 200m
• Alexis Franklin – No. 4 in the 60m hurdles
• Ashlee Abraham – No. 5 in the 60m and No. 23 in the 200m
• Aisha Cavin – No. 7 in the 400m
• Abie Ehimwenman – No. 15 in the long jump
• Alexandria Johnson – No. 18 in the 60m hurdles
• Emily Taylor – No. 21 in the weight throw
• Aaliyah Everson – No. 24 in the 200m
• SoSo Walker – No. 25 in the 400m
Last Time Out
The Buckeyes opened the 2014 indoor season Jan. 10 as hosts of the Buckeye Classic at French Field House. Several local teams and individuals joined Ohio State in front of an impressive hometown crowd of nearly 1,000.
Sykes led the way for the Buckeyes with wins in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. Sophomore Alexis Franklin also enjoyed an impressive debut, posting a personal-best time of 8.35 in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior Abie Ehimwenman also turned in a PR in the long jump, taking first place at 6.01 meters (19-8.75).
In all, Ohio State claimed wins in 11 events.
