COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team concluded competition at the 2013 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich. The squad totaled eight singles victories and four doubles wins on the weekend.
Freshman Gabriella De Santis advanced to the second round of play in the singles main draw after posting a 6-2, 7-5, victory over NIU’s Nelle Youel. In the round of 32, De Santis rallied to force a third set vs. DePaul’s Ana Vladutu, but dropped the match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
After dropping the second-set tiebreaker, Grâinne O’Neill fell to Illinois’ Jerrika Boone in the first round of singles play, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Sandy Niehaus, who qualified for a spot in main draw singles, was defeated by Notre Dame’s Monica Robinson, 6-1, 6-4. Kowase was eliminated from competition after falling to Michigan’s Amy Zhu in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
In the round of 16 of the doubles main draw, Kowase and O’Neill fell to the Illinois tandem of Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong, 8-5. The pair has collected four wins during the fall campaign.
Up next, the Buckeyes are slated to compete in the Tennessee Fall Invite Oct. 25-27 in Knoxville, Tenn.
