COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 11th annual Connor Senn Memorial Match was called in the 31st minute because of heavy storms in the area with the Crew leading Ohio State men’s soccer 4-0 Tuesday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in front of 1,072 fans.
“The relationships with the hospital and the athletic department there was a lot more pregame publicity than there has been in the past,” Bluem said of the crowd. “To play the Crew in the game is the difference maker. People want to come see the Columbus Crew and see how Ohio State stacks up against the Columbus Crew. Unfortunately we didn’t have good performance tonight, but were not worried about that. We want to spread the message and get the word out to people.”
Cole Grossman had two goals for the Crew, who posted three scores within the first six minutes of action. Grossman connected on a cross from Aubrey Perry and sent it into the left side of the goal early in the second minute of play before Bernardo Anor followed up three minutes later off of a pass from Emilio Renteria to make it 2-0 in the fourth minute.
Not letting up, the Crew scored in the sixth minute off of a header from Renteria with the assist credited to Anor and added the fourth and final tally came in the 27th when Grossman launched a blast from 20 yards out.
Despite the negative result, however, Ohio State remains a winner off the field as the legacy of Connor Senn lives on yet another year.
All money generated from the ticket sales will go into the Connor Senn Memorial Fund, which will be directed towards the Connor Senn Educational Symposium on Sudden Cardiac Death in Athletes. The project, devoted to educating the medical community and general public on cardiac health, is a joint venture between The Ohio State University Medical Center’s Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, the Ohio State University Department of Athletics, the Ohio State University men’s soccer team, and the Connor Senn Memorial Fund.
“The new symposium is the platform we’ve been looking for to tell this story of Connor, a tragic story of a young man and there are so many young athletes that suffer from sudden cardiac death and sudden cardiac incidents like this,” Bluem said. “To spread the message and have a symposium like this to educate people and raise money for research is something that we hope will expand from Columbus and this relationship to other communities across the country and maybe worldwide someday.”
The symposium will take place from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Ohio Union (1739 N. High St.) and there is no fee for members of the community to attend. This is the 10th time in 11 seasons the Buckeyes have hosted the Crew in this spring exhibition and with each year, awareness of cardiac health and the effect Connor Senn had on this community expand.
“The fact that we’re still doing this is pretty amazing there’s been so many people behind the scenes that have made this happen,” Bluem said. “It’s a tragic story but out of it were really making some progress toward doing some good things and hopefully what happened to Connor can avoid happening to someone else’s son someday.”
