Field Events Star on Day One at Drake Relays – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s track and field team opened competition at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday afternoon.
Korbin Smith and Michael Hartfield highlighted day one competition from Drake Stadium for the Scarlet and Gray, turning in a 2-3 finish in the long jump. Smith was the runner-up with a top-15 Division I jump of 7.64m (25-0.75), while Hartfield claimed the bronze medal with a season-best mark of 7.51m (24-7.75). Missouri’s Malcom Pennix was the winner with a 7.71m (25-3.50) leap.
“We had a solid first day at the relays,” Ohio State interim head coach Ed Beathea said. “The meet serves as a great way to showcase our team against a host of talented national players like Florida, Georgia and Baylor. We also get a nice preview of some of the other teams in our conference that we will see in two weeks at the Big Ten championships.”
Other Buckeye highlights from day one:
110m Hurdles
Demoye Bogle finished fourth in his heat and eighth overall in a time of 14.22 to qualify for Saturday’s finals. Florida’s Eddie Lovett ran a time of 13.98 to take the top qualifying position headed in the championship race.
Shot Put
A top-15 DI throw of 18.77m (61-7.00) helped Matt DeChant to runner-up honors in the event. Tim Nedow of DePaul took home the gold medal at 19.69m (64-7.25).
4x100m Prelims
The Ohio State team of Bogle, Timothy Faust, Nick Batcha and Brandon Blackwell placed second in its heat and 11th overall in a time of 41.21, falling three spots shy of final round qualification. Baylor posted the top time of the day, completing its relay in 40.63 seconds.
4x400m Prelims
Antonio Blanks, Korbin Smith and Marvel and Marcus Brooks used a season-best time of 3:09.39 to place third in their heat and sixth overall, qualifying for tomorrow’s championship. Florida finished first overall in the prelim with a time of 3:08.80.
