NAMPA, Idaho – As the first day of competition wrapped up at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships, the Ohio State contingent gave their all inside the Idaho Center Friday. Christina Manning will represent the Buckeyes as she advanced to Saturday’s finals in the 60m dash and 60m hurdles.
Manning finished the 60m hurdles at the top of her heat and third overall with a time of 7.98. Tomorrow’s finals are slated to begin at 8:45 p.m. ET Saturday. Clemson’s hurdling duo of Brianna Rollins (7.93) and Bridgette Owens (7.95) went 1-2 in their heat and overall in the prelims. Rollins’ time is the fastest in the nation this season and Rollins, Owens and Manning all broke the four-year-old facility record that was previously 8.04.
Chesna Sykes joined Manning in the prelims for the 60m dash. Manning (7.29) placed fourth in her heat and posted the seventh-best time overall to just make it into Saturday’s finals. Sykes crossed the line in 7.40 for tenth overall in her debut NCAA indoor championships to narrowly miss qualifying. Finishing first was Oregon’s English Gardner who ran the top time in the country. Gardner also led a trio of athletes who broke the facility record with their prelim times. The finals for the 60m dash is scheduled to begin tomorrow night at 9:45 p.m. ET.
In the weight throw Maggie Mullen placed ninth, identical to her finish last season. The senior’s top mark was 19.62m (64-4.5), which came on her third throw of the night earning her second team All-America honors. Jeneva McCall from Southern Illinois improved on her second-place finish from last season to win the title with a facility-record throw of 22.90m (75-1.75).
