COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team lost to Indiana, 4-3, Sunday in Columbus in a Big Ten Conference matchup. The match started at the new Ohio State University Outdoor Tennis Center but play was halted with singles underway because of precipitation and play was completed at the Buckeyes’ indoor facility. Buckeye juniors Gabby Steele and Fidan Manashirova both won in singles and doubles, with freshman Kelsey Dieters also posting a singles victory.
The Buckeyes hit the road for their next two matches, playing at Nebraska Friday and at Iowa Sunday. The team will return to Columbus for matches against Wisconsin and Minnesota April 6 and 8, respectively.
The Hoosiers won the doubles point with victories on courts 1 and 3. On court two, the tandem of Steele and Manashirova rallied for an 8-6 victory over Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva. The Buckeye duo is first on the squad in doubles team wins, joining up for 15 victories, including an 11-3 dual match record.
Manashirova, who won her first set 6-0 before the match was moved, continued her strong play indoors and closed out her match against Katie Klyczek with a 6-2 second-set victory on court three, tying the match at 1. After Fujimoto pushed the Hoosiers ahead with a straight-set win at No. 6, Dieters posted Ohio State’s second team point with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alecia Kauss at No. 5. Wins by Indiana on courts one and two gave the Hoosiers four team points and the Big Ten victory. Steele closed out the day with a three-set victory on court four, defeating Carolyn Chupa, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Steele, who leads the Buckeyes with 15 wins this season, is 9-1 in her last 10 matches. Dieters is second with 14 victories and is on a three-match winning streak, going 7-3 in her last 10 outings, while Manashirova is third on the squad with 13 victories.
This marked the seventh time this season Ohio State ended a match with a 4-3 score.
