COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a surge during singles to claim a 3-2 lead, the 66th-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at home to No. 27 Purdue Friday evening. The match was officially the first played at the Buckeyes’ new outdoor tennis facility as doubles was completed before inclement weather forced the competition inside.?

Ohio State (5-10, 0-2 Big Ten) was able to record a trio of singles victories against the Boilermakers (10-1, 2-0 Big Ten).?

Ohio State hosts its second match of the weekend at 11 a.m. Sunday as the team takes on Indiana. The match is scheduled to be played outside.?

Purdue earned the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The first match off the court – and the first match victory in facility history – was an 8-3 win by Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele at No. 2 over Gisella Pere and Imogen Golder. The Boilermakers’ Lynda Xepoleas and Daniele Vidal posted an 8-4 victory over Kelsey Haviland and Kelsey Becker to tie doubles at one apiece. On court one, the Purdue tandem pulled away late for an 8-5 victory over Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters.?

At No. 2 doubles, Steele had the first serve in a match on the new courts and she and teammate Manashirova recorded the first point. Purdue’s No. 3 doubles team won the first game in the new facility.?

After moving indoors for singles, Purdue extended its lead to 2-0 when Pere notched a win at No. 6 singles over Tiffany Dittmer, 6-3, 6-1. The Scarlet and Gray proceeded to reel off three singles victories in a row to give Ohio State a 3-2 lead, led by Haviland’s 7-6, 6-2 win over Xepoleas on court two.?
?Manashirova followed shortly afterward, downing Mara Schmidt, 6-3, 7-5, on court three while Dieters wrapped up the scoring for Ohio State with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Golder on court five.?
?The Boilermakers showed their tenacity, claiming a straight sets win on court four before taking the match’s only three-setter on court one to secure the victory.
