Three Buckeyes Named to Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team – Ohio State Buckeyes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After claiming a 3-0 record this past weekend, the Ohio State softball team was named the 2012 Tiger Classic Tournament Champion in Nashville, Tenn. Seniors Alicia Herron and Vanessa Spears and freshman Taylor Watkins were named to the Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Buckeyes (14-8; 0-0 Big Ten) claimed victories against host-Tennessee State (6-0), Belmont (15-3; 6 innings) and St. Bonaventure (8-2) March 16-18 at Tiger Field.
Herron, a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, posted two home runs, eight RBI, five runs scored and two stolen bases in the three games in Nashville. The senior captain knocked two home runs vs. Belmont March 17 to pass former Buckeye Kristine Himes for second on the OSU all-time career list with 43 home runs.
Spears, a native of Brea, Calif., batted .455 at the plate with five hits, a team-high six runs scored, one home run and three RBI. She is currently batting .381 through 22 games in 2012.
Watkins, a native of Bonney Lake, Wash., led the team in hitting with a .583 average, collecting seven hits with a double and five runs scored. The OSU rookie is fourth on the team with a .353 average and tied for second on the team in hits with 24 this season.
Ohio State travels to Louisville today to prepare for a doubleheader vs. the Cardinals (21-0) beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ulmer Stadium.
