COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior All-American Christina Manning was named to the Watch List for The Bowerman Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Bowerman is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation.
A native of Waldorf, Md., Manning, the Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championships, claimed conference titles in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash and collected a silver medal in the 200m dash Sunday afternoon at the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb. Each time Manning stepped up to race, Ohio State track history was made as the senior broke school records with her times in the 60m dash (7.23) and 200m dash (23.43), and tied Donica Merriman’s 12-year-old school record of 7.95 in the hurdles, also a Big Ten championship meet record. As the NCAA indoor meet approaches, Manning holds the No. 1 hurdle time, No. 5 60m dash time, and No. 10 200m dash time in Division I. Manning’s historic performance at the Big Ten championships continued a stellar indoor season that included six Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week award-winning performances from the Buckeye star.
“It’s exciting for our program and Christina to be among the nation’s great collegiate athletes included on the Bowerman Watch List,” Ohio State head coach Karen Dennis said. “I believe Christina deserves this recognition as she has established herself throughout the year as one of the premier hurdler/sprinters in the country. What’s important now is how well she competes among the best collegiate athletes next week in Boise. It’s an honor for her to be recognized among the great collegiate athletes currently on the prestigious Bowerman Watch List. We’re certainly proud of her here in Buckeye country.”
Washington’s Katie Flood and Kamaria Brown of Texas A&M join Manning as the newest additions to the 10-person Bowerman Watch List. Created in 2009 in honor of former Oregon men’s track & field and cross country coach Bill Bowerman, the award considers performances from both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Finalists are announced after the NCAA outdoor championship meet and voting by USTFCCCA members and fans determines a winner. Last season, Jessica Beard of Texas A&M took home The Bowerman in its third year of existence.
