McGinnis breaks 500m dash meet record – Ohio State Buckeyes

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 15 Ohio State women’s track and field team finished day one of the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame Friday evening.
The top performance on the night was delivered by senior Shaniqua McGinnis who blew the field away in the 500m dash after breaking a meet record that stood for 14 years. McGinnis crossed the line in 1:11.84. Janel Olberding used a time of 1:16.22 to take 15th.
With a fourth-place finish in the prelims, Adenike Pedro (7.59) is set to run in the finals for the 60m dash Saturday.
Tori Brink, Katie Betts, Jordan Jennewine and Katie Borchers combined for a third-place finish in the distance medley relay in 11:27.78. The Wolverines won the race in 11:04.30.
Alexis Thomas set a new PR of 20.15m (66-1) in the weight throw on her way to finishing second. Not far behind Thomas was Maggie Mullen (19.43m/63-9) who placed fourth. Felisha Johnson (20.69m/67-10) of Indiana State placed first.
Picking up another bronze medal for Ohio State was Ashley Galbraith. Galbraith cleared the bar at 1.75m (5-9). Southern Mississippi’s Ke’Airra Jones took first with a mark of 1.78m (5-10).
Pedro (6.00m/19-8.25) and Kelcey McKinney (5.94m/19-6) led the way for the Buckeyes in the long jump placing sixth and seventh, respectively. Using a mark of 5.72m (18-9) was Abie Ehimwenman for 14th. Conference rival Leah Eber from Purdue won with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 6.47m (21-2).
Saturday action from South Bend will start at approximately 10 a.m. ET with the 3000m run. Short sprinters and hurdlers will take the track Saturday for running events at the one-day Orange and Blue Open which will start with the 60m dash at noon ET from the U of I Armory Track & Floor.
