COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior All-American Christina Manning has been chosen by the Big Ten conference to receive two of the season’s highest honors after her record-breaking performances at the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Championships last weekend. The Buckeyes used five school records and numerous personal-best performances to place second at the Big Ten championships behind host Nebraska.
Manning was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championships for the second consecutive year after claiming conference titles in the 60m hurdles and 60m dash and a runner-up finish in the 200m dash. The Waldorf, Md., native broke school records with her times in the 60m dash (7.23) and 200m dash (23.43) and tied Donica Merriman’s 12-year-old school record of 7.95 in the hurdles. Manning’s hurdle time was also a Big Ten championship meet record. As the NCAA indoor meet quickly approaches, Manning holds the No. 1 hurdle time, No. 5 60m dash time and No. 10 200m dash time in Division I this season.
Merriman and Manning are the only Buckeyes to win Athlete of the Year recognition. Bridgette Tate joins the pair as the only members of the Scarlet and Gray to have earned Athlete of the Championship honors in program history.
Joining Manning as a First Team All-Big Ten performer is senior Shaniqua McGinnis who won the fourth Big Ten title of her career and her first in the 600m dash. The Shaker Heights native set a school record and a Devaney Center record in the process of winning the title with a time of 1:28.14. McGinnis was also named the Ohio State recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
Chesna Sykes earned a spot on the conference Second Team after a runner-up finish in the 60m dash in a PR time of 7.31.
