Columbus, Ohio – Emily Creran, Megan Detro and Shannon Draves are serving as captains of the Ohio State women’s swimming squad; their leadership has spurred the Buckeyes into one of their most successful seasons ever.
“Our team voted on captains during the grind of December training,” explained Ohio State head coach Bill Dorenkott.
“We specifically asked the team to look for individuals who lead through example by their work ethic, consistency and passion for the sport. Emily, Megan and Shannon came forth as nominated by their peers.
“We are implementing a new model here in naming these young ladies as captains for the next 18 months. They will lead us into one of the most exciting periods in Ohio State women’s swimming history, starting with the 2012 NCAAs and moving through Olympic Trials as well as 2013 Big Tens and NCAAs.
“Megan, Shannon and Emily all possess self-discipline and grit. These qualities have served them well and will allow them to lead others.
“Stefanie (Williams, associate head coach) and I could not agree more that each of these young ladies bring much to the table as captains. As leaders, they each have unique skill sets that will lend themselves to growth opportunities for their teammates and our program.”
Creran, a junior exercise science major from Haddonfield, N.J., was the Big Ten runner-up in the 200 backstroke this year. She holds the Ohio State records in the 200 back and 400 IM.
Detro, a junior health sciences major from Carmel, Indiana, was the 2011 Big Ten champion in the 100 free, and holds the school records in the 50 free, 100 free and in four relays. She was part of Ohio State’s Big Ten runner-up relays in the 200 free and 200 medley races.
Draves, a junior human development major from Gilbertsville, Pa., won the Big Ten title last weekend in the 200 butterfly. She is the OSU record holder in the 100 and 200 fly and on both medley relay teams.
The 14th-ranked Buckeyes, who won both the Pitt and Ohio State Invitationals and are 10-0 in dual meet action, just finished a convincing third at the Big Ten championships. The women’s NCAA championships are March 15-17 at Auburn.
