COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team claimed a 334.200 team total for second place in a tri-meet against No. 7 Michigan and SUNY Brockport Saturday evening at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The meet was televised on BTN on tape-delayed basis and will broadcast at 1 p.m. Feb. 25.
Michigan won the tri-meet with a 345.700, while the Golden Eagles finished in third place with a 275.700.
“We had a rough night from the start with three misses on pommel horse,” head coach Rustam Sharipov said. “We had a good vault performance and one miss on rings. I think this will be a good experience for such a young team. We have to go back to the gym and work even harder now.”
Ohio State began the evening on pommel horse and collected a 54.900 team total led by freshman Alex Nork with a season-high 14.10 for second overall followed by junior John Laing with a 14.0 mark, who tied for third overall.
Moving on to rings, Philip Onorato scored a 14.20 for fourth overall to guide the squad, while sophomore Misha Koudinov tallied a 14.00 for fifth place. The Buckeyes scored a 55.100 as a team.
On floor exercise, freshman Danny Steiner claimed a team-best 14.900 to help the Buckeyes collect a 56.900 total. Steiner tied for first overall in the meet with Sam Mikulak of Michigan. Junior co-captain Blaize Monks notched a 14.30 followed by Koudinov with a 14.00.
Next on parallel bars, the Scarlet and Gray posted a 53.100 team total led by Koudinov, who collected a 13.70 on the event to tie for second place.
Ohio State then went on to high bar during the fifth rotation, trailing Michigan 232.400-220.000. Freshman Drew Moling claimed a team-high 14.2, while Brandän Jones claimed a career-high 14.00 on high bar, while Monks also notched a 14.00. Moling finished the event in third place, while Jones and Monks tied for fourth, respectively.
In the final rotation, Ohio State notched a 58.400 on vault – just .200 off the team’s season high set at the Windy City Invitational. Freshman Larry Mayer and Steiner led the pack with each scoring a 14.70, while Monks earned a 14.60 and freshman Andrew Teal claimed a 14.40. Mayer and Teal tied for fourth overall in the competition.
The Buckeyes will continue their dual season next weekend, hosting Penn State at 4 p.m. Feb. 25 at St. John Arena.
