Ohio State Falls in Semifinals of the Big Ten Match Play Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State golf team fell to Northwestern, 5-1, Saturday in the semifinals of the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Bradenton, Fla. The Scarlet and Gray advanced to the semifinals after two wins Friday, but were unable to hang on to reach the finals of the tournament.
Dan Charen recorded his third match play win of the tournament going 1-up on Northwestern’s Bennett Lavin. The Buckeye senior finished strong after back and forth lead changes throughout the round.
The freshmen, Grant Weaver and Boo Timko, each lost close matches to the Wildcats. Weaver finished 3&2 to Northwestern’s Jack Perry, while Timko was dropped 3&2 by Sam Chien. Junior Matt Turner also lost a close match, with Matthew Negri having the advantage by one.
Also competing for the Buckeyes were Alex Redfield and Logan Jones. Northwestern’s Eric Chun downed Redfield 5&3, while Nick Losole topped Jones 5&3 as well.
Last season Ohio State followed a similar path at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, finishing third after dropping a tiebreaker to Indiana in the semifinals.
Up next, the Buckeyes will travel to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico for the Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 19-21. A short break will follow before Ohio State returns to Florida for the FAU Spring Break Championships, March 23-25.
