COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team kicked off its spring schedule Friday with wins in the first and quarterfinal rounds of the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Bradenton, Fla. The Scarlet and Gray defeated Wisconsin 4-2 in the first round of play and Indiana 3-2-1 in the quarterfinals on the par 72, 7,474-yard course at The Concession Golf Club.
In the first round, senior Alex Redfield took an early one-stroke lead over Wisconsin junior Anthony Aicher after the opening hole. Redfield’s lead climbed to 5-up and eventually concluded the match 4&3 over Aicher. Fellow senior Dan Charen also built a sustaining lead over Corey Ziendonis to finish 5&4 for the round.
Junior Matt Turner tallied a win for the Buckeyes, ending the morning 2-up on Tom Welk, while redshirt freshman Logan Jones extended the win total to four with a 2&1 win over Brady Keegan. Freshmen Grant Weaver and Boo Timko each recorded losses in the opening round. Weaver ceded to Thomas O’Bryan, 2 &1, and Timko battled Chris Meyer to a 4&3 finish.
Moving into the championship bracket, Weaver and Timko redeemed their morning loses with impressive wins over the Hoosiers. Weaver defeated Indiana’s David Mills 5&4 after taking an early 3-up lead after four holes of play. Timko also had a consistent performance over Brank Peaper to finish the match 3&2.
Charen helped build the Ohio State lead to three after his second win of the day, this time over Indiana’s Corey Ziendonis. The Hoosiers, however, gave the Buckeyes a challenge with 2 wins of their own, one in the match-up of Redfield vs. Chase Wright (1-up) and another in Jones vs. Andrew Fogg (3 and 1). Turner fended off a final push from Indiana, finishing his match against Davis Erdy even. The final tie allowed the Buckeyes to advance to the semifinals with a final 3-2-1 victory.
In other quarterfinal action, the No. 8 seed Minnesota upset No. 1 seed Illinois in a tiebreaker, while No. 2 seed Iowa was also upset by the No. 7 seed Northwestern. Purdue moved into the semifinals with a 5-1 win over Nebraska.
Ohio State will return Saturday to take on Northwestern in the semifinal round. The Buckeyes are scheduled to begin at 7:40 a.m., but schedule changes are projected depending on play. Final and consolation matches will follow later in the day. Live scoring will again be available at http://www.ajga.org/big10mpc/index2.asp#2.
