Ohio State dominated its dual meet with rival Michigan 164.50-132.50 Saturday afternoon at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, defeating the Wolverines for just the third time in four decades.
“I’m pleased with how we raced today and proud of the effort,” said Ohio State head coach Bill Dorenkott. “Last night, we ran into some bad weather coming back from Michigan State and didn’t get home until 1 a.m., but I think that was good for us, because in order to be a championship caliber team, you have to be tough physically and emotionally. Our team had great focus today and we were able to keep our heads down on the finishes.”
In the 50 freestyle, Megan Detro won in a time of 23.16; fellow Buckeye Michelle Williams was third (23.51). In the 100 free, Williams was the winner (50.25) with Detro placing second (50.84). Ohio State finished one-two in the 200 freestyle, behind the performances of Alex Norris (1:49.45) and Phoebe Cater (1:49.87); Lisa Narum(1:51.60) was fourth in that race.
Buckeyes Angela Severn (1:03.55) and Catherine Eitel (1:03.59) were one-two in the 100 breaststroke, with Ashley Vance finishing fourth (1:04.85). Severn was the winner of the 200 breaststroke (2:20.26), followed by OSU’s Lisa Narum(2:20.71) in second.
Junior Kelsey Moran captured the 100 backstroke in a time of 55.24; OSU’s Emily Creran (56.79) and Lauren Massey(57.00) were fourth and fifth in that race. Michigan’s Ashley Cohagen was the winner in the 200 back (2:00.01), followed by Buckeyes Creran (2:01.92) and Massey (2:02.68).
Shannon Draves of Ohio State and Caitlin Dauw of Michigan tied for the fastest time in the 200 butterfly, both swimming that race in 1:58.87. Ohio State’s Darcy Fishback(2:01.44) took third. Dauw was the winner of the 100 fly (53.77), with Draves second (54.43) and Fishback third (56.33) in that race.
Michigan’s Adrienne Bicek won the 1000 freestyle (9:51.62); Ohio State swimmers Kelly Ann Baird (9:54.39), Natalie Nichols (10:01.47) and Kelly Titus (10:02.04) finished second, third and fourth in that event. Bicek also won the 500 free in a time of 4:53.18. OSU’s Alex Norriswas second (4:53.89) in the 500, with Titus placing third (4:55.05) and Baird fourth (4:55.55). Val Barthelemy of Michigan won the 200 IM (2:07.84)
Buckeye Bianca Alvarez won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 360.23; her teammates Cheyenne Cousineau (328.50), Kristen Asman (321.08) and Taylor Ford(300.45) finished third through fifth in that event. In three-meter diving, Michigan’s Amanda Lohman was the winner (319.43). Cousineau (299.70), Alvarez (297.08), Ford (288.90) and Asman (288.83) were second through fifth.
Ohio State’s entry of Kelsey Moran, Angela Severn, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro captured the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:42.25. The Buckeyes’ relay of Emily Creran, Catherine Eitel, Darcy Fishback and Michelle Williams placed third (3:45.01). In the 200 freestyle relay, Ohio State’s unit of Michelle Williams, Megan Detro, Phoebe Cater and Kelsey Moranswam the fastest time as an exhibition, finishing in 1:33.03.
Seniors Bianca Alvarez, Kristen Asman, Jackie Brousseau, Catherine Eitel, Lisa Narum and Natalie Nichols were honored before today’s competition, the final dual meet of the season for the Buckeye women.
“I think this class, more so than the previous three Stefanie and I have worked with, have had the hardest role. They came into something they didn’t sign on for and the culture and expectations are different than when they were recruited,” said Dorenkott. “It’s an absolute credit to them that they’ve adapted to those expectations and adapted to that culture. In a lot of ways they not only adapted, they embraced it. The two greatest things you could say about somebody when they’re part of a team, business or organization is that they left things better than they found them and they will be missed, I can say on both of those counts this class has been a success. They’ve left things better than they found them and they absolute will be missed.”
The Buckeyes, now 8-0 in dual meet competition, return to action next weekend at Notre Dame’s Shamrock Invitational.
