COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2011-12 Ohio State men’s golf team hit the course on a misty Wednesday for the first two rounds of fall qualifying. Senior Alex Redfield opened with a team-leading 142 on the par-71, 7,455-yard Scarlet Course.
After shooting a 3-over 74 in the first round, Redfield followed with a 3-under 68 in the afternoon. The second-round score earned the Columbus product his new team bag as a score of 69 or below is needed for the award.
“Alex’s game looked really good especially in the afternoon round,” Donnie Darr, head men’s golf coach, said. “He shot a stress-free first two rounds and his game looks solid.”
A pair of Buckeyes in junior Jamie Sindelar and freshman Boo Timko sit in second with a 36-hole score of 144. Sindelar, a Horseheads, N.Y., product, opened with an even-par 71 and followed with a 2-over 73, while Timko, of Girard, Ohio, flip-flopped by shooting a 73 and 71.
“Boo did a nice job putting him into position to qualify for his first collegiate tournament,” Darr said. “He played a nice two rounds of golf with nothing flashy. I’m anxious to see how he handles the pressure towards the end of qualifying.”
Ohio State begins tournament action Sept. 12-13 when the team travels to Huntington, W.Va., to kick off the 2011-12 season at the Marshall Invitational.
