No. 22 OSU Loses, 3-1, to No. 23 Long Beach State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 22nd-ranked Ohio State (4-3 overall) women’s volleyball team fell, 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21) to 23rd-ranked Long Beach State (3-3) on the final day of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. OSU’s Emily Danks produced a co-match-high 18 points against the 49ers with 15 kills (.196), two ace serves and two assist blocks. Kelli Barhorst added 15 points with 11 kills (.471), two solo blocks and four assist blocks. Long Beach State’s Caitlin Ledoux shared match-high honors with Danks with 18 points on 17 kills (.283) and two assist blocks. Three 49ers added 13 points each with Haleigh Hampton collecting 10 kills (.222) and six assist blocks, Janisa Johnson 12 kills (.129) and two assist blocks and Delainey Aigner-Swesey 10 kills (.280) and six assist blocks.
OSU opened set one with two kills from Danks. The Buckeyes held the lead at 12-9 before a Ledoux kill and two from Hampton tied the set at 12. Tied at 18, a solo block from Erin Juley and an Alma Serna kill gave Long Beach State a 20-18 lead. Kills from Ledoux and Mari Hole made it 21-19. Serna and Hole, with kills, made it 22-20. The score reached 23-21 with kills from Johnson and Danks. An OSU error gave Long Beach State set point at 24-21. The 49ers won the set, 25-21, off a Buckeye error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The 49ers hit .282 for the set to .143 for Ohio State.
Tied at two in set two, kills from Danks and Barhorst and two from Hole gave Ohio State a 6-2 lead. Trailing, 15-13, a kill from Hampton and an OSU error tied the set at 15. A kill from Danks and a 49er error gave OSU a 17-15 lead. Leading by two, a Taylor Sherwin kill gave OSU a 20-17 lead. At 22-18, kills from Ledoux and Johnson cut the lead to two at 22-20. A kill from Kaitlyn Leary and an OSU error made it 23-21. Long Beach State cut the lead to one at 23-22 with a Ledoux kill. OSU reached set point with a Mariah Booth kill. The 49ers stopped the set point with a kill from Juley at 24-23. Ohio State, with a kill from Danks, won the set, 25-23, to tie the match at one set each. Long Beach State hit .314 for the set to .304 for the Buckeyes.
Long Beach State broke a 1-1 tie in set three with a Johnson kill, an OSU error and a Hampton-Aigner-Swesey block for a 4-1 lead. A Booth kill stopped the run at 4-2. The 49ers expanded the lead to 7-2 with kills from Ledoux and Aigner-Swesey and a Buckeye error. Long Beach State held the team to reach set point at 24-16 off an OSU error. The 49ers won the set, 25-15, with a Hampton kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Long Beach State hit .206 for the set to -.050 for Ohio State.
Set four saw 12 ties and six lead changes. OSU trailed, 3-2, when a Barhorst kill tied the set at three. The Buckeyes scored the next four points to take a 7-3 lead. The run contained a kill from Leary, a block from Barhorst and two 49er errors. Long Beach State responded with an Aigner-Swesey kill, a Johnson-Serna block and two Tyler Jackson ace serves to tie the set at seven. Trailing, 14-12, OSU scored the next six points to take a 17-14 lead. The run included kills from Barhorst and Hole to tie the set at 14. An ace serve from Danks, a kill from Hole and a 49er error completed the run. Kills from Aigner-Swesey and Ledoux and an Aigner-Swesey-Serna block tied the set at 17. At 20-all, a 49er error gave OSU a 21-20 lead. A Ledoux kill and a Hampton-Ledoux block gave Long Beach State a 22-21 lead. A Ledoux kill and an OSU error gave the 49ers match point at 24-21. A Ledoux kill ended the set at 25-21 to give Long Beach State a 3-1 win in the match. The 49ers hit .122 for the set to .083 for Ohio State.
For the match, Long Beach State hit .228 to .128 for Ohio State. The 49ers had a 55-53 edge in kills and a 53-48 margin in assists. Juley recorded a match-high 50 assists for LBS with OSU’s Sherwin producing 41. The 49ers had a 3-2 advantage in ace serves with Jackson collecting three for Long Beach State and Danks, two for OSU. The 49ers gave up seven service errors to six for OSU. Defensively, Long Beach State had a 68-62 margin in digs with Jackson recording a match-high 17 for the 49ers. OSU’s Sarah Mignin had a team-high 15 for the Buckeyes. At the net, Long Beach State had a 15 to 7.4 advantage in team blocks. Hampton, Aigner-Swesey and Serna recorded a match-high six assists each. OSU’s Barhorst shared match-high honors with two solos and four assist blocks.
In the final match of the Classic, 12th-ranked UCLA (6-0) defeated 10th-ranked Hawaii (5-1), 3-1 (25-20, 28-26, 20-25, 25-17) to win the championship. OSU’s Danks was named to the All-Tournament team along with Long Beach State’s Ledoux, Hawaii’s Kanani Danielson and Emily Harton and UCLA’s Lainey Gera. Rachel Kidder was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Classic.
Ohio State continues on the road next week in Toledo, Ohio at the Rocket Classic. The Buckeyes play Penn (2-1) Friday at 5 p.m. OSU continues play Saturday against Alabama (4-3) at Noon and face host Toledo (3-3) at 7 p.m.
