Columbus, Ohio –
The Ohio State softball team will host the 11th Annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic October 8-9 at Fred Beekman Park on the Ohio State campus, an event that has grown into one of the biggest fundraisers for Breast Cancer Awareness in Central Ohio, raising more than $149,000 in the past decade.
A total of 15 teams will compete in the event, which benefits the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. The teams participating in the event this year include: Ohio State, Ashland, Capital, Dayton, Denison, Mount Union, Oberlin, Ohio, Ohio Dominican, Otterbein, Toledo, Ursuline, Wittenberg, Wright State and Youngstown State.
Spielman passed away Nov. 19, 2009, after a 12-year battle with the disease and is survived by her husband, former Buckeye standout Buckeye linebacker Chris Spielman, and their four children, Madison, Noah, Macy and Audrey.
The Spielmans, Stefanie and Chris, established the Stefanie Spielman Fund and pledged to raise $1 million for breast cancer research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University. The goal has been surpassed, but the Fund continues the fight against breast cancer. Fred Beekman Park is an eight-field complex located west of State Route 315 at Lane Avenue. Concessions will be available from the Central Ohio Coaches Association and bleacher seating is limited. Admission to the event will be a $5 donation and all proceeds go directly to the charity.
