Ohio State Finishes 5-1 on Final Day of Muirfield Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team closed the 2011 Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational by sweeping four singles matches and splitting a pair of doubles matches Sunday at the Country Club at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
With both Buckeye doubles teams in the consolation brackets, the duo of Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters scored an 8-2 victory over Julia Fellerhoff and Becca Shine of Louisville before Tiffany Dittmer and Kelsey Becker dropped an 8-4 decision to Mariya Toncheva and Dephne Friedrichs of Eastern Michigan. Dieters and Cecil took three of four matches throughout the tournament, while Dittmer and Becker teamed for a single victory.
In singles, Becker took down Ball State’s Paola Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-2, while Dittmer notched a win against Saffiya Ismail of Cincinnati, 6-3, 6-1, and Dieters defeated EMU’s Ankita Bhatia, 6-0, 6-3. Cecil wrapped up singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against EMU’s Nino Mebuke.
In total, Ohio State claimed 11 singles victories and four doubles wins. After dropping her opening match, Dieters rebounded to win three-consecutive matches. Dittmer took a pair of matches in the main draw to reach the quarterfinals and ultimately finished with three victories as well.
Cecil found herself on the winning side of three matches also, while Becker secured a pair of wins, including a tournament-opening play-in match.
Louisville’s Julia Fellerhoff, the second seed in singles, took home the inaugural singles title at the event, upsetting 118th-ranked Zara Harutyunyan of Akron, 6-4, 7-5. Harutyunyan was a champion as well, taking home the doubles crown alongside teammate Prang Pantusart. The Zip duo defeated EMU’s Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke in the final, 8-5.
Ohio State is back in action Oct. 7-9 at the West Virginia Martha Thorn Invitational in Morgantown, W. Va., before hosting the ITA Midwest Regional Oct. 20-25.
