COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team saw a Buckeye doubles team advance to the semifinals and a singles player reach the quarterfinals, but neither could break through in main draws at the Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational at the Country Club in Dublin, Ohio, Saturday.
The doubles duo of freshman Kelsey Dieters and junior Kara Cecil took down Ksenia Beretstetska and Olga Shkundina of Akron in the quarterfinals, 8-5, but dropped their semifinals match under the lights against Eastern Michigan’s Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke, 8-4.
Sophomore Tiffany Dittmer punched her ticket to the quarterfinals with a victory over Jasmine Lee of Cincinnati. The Hamburg, Germany, native ran into second-seeded Julia Fellerhoff of Louisville in the next round, however, and fell 6-1, 7-5.
In backdraw action, Dieters scored a pair of straight-set singles victories, including her first collegiate singles victory, which came against Claire McNulty of Dayton, 6-1, 6-2. The Michigan native followed up with a second win against Mercela Rivero of EMU, 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore Kelsey Becker dropped a tough, 6-2, 6-2 match to EMU’s Ankita Bhatia, but teamed with Dittmer earlier in the day to notch a doubles win against Sarah Hebble and Lauren Pickrel of Ball State, 8-6.
Play continues Sunday at 10 a.m. with doubles, including the main draw final between Westerink/Mebuke and Haruntyunyan/Pantusart of Akron. Singles semifinals begin at 11:30 a.m., while the final match will be played at 2 p.m.
The singles have become a two-team affair, as the final four players come from Akron and Louisville. Top-seeded Zara Harytyunyan, ranked No. 118 nationally, faces Becca Shine of Louisville, while Prang Pantusart takes on second-seeded Fellerhoff.
