Successful Summer Showings for Buckeyes – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Current and former members of the Ohio State men’s golf team have had strong performances this summer on both the amateur and professional levels.
At the Ohio Open Championship held July 18-20, recent graduate Brad Smith fired a 66 in the opening round of the tournament: a mark that tied for the third-best score in the field all weekend. He followed with a pair of 71s in the final two rounds to card an 8-under 208 for a fifth-place tie.
Also competing in the Open were former Buckeyes Vaughn Snyder and Brad Wright, rising sophomore Logan Jones and incoming freshman Boo Timko. Snyder finished in a tie for 21st (215), while Jones shot a 218 to tie for 34th. Wright missed the cut by a stroke after tallying a two-round total of 146 and Timko tallied a 36-hole score of 149.
The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational was held last week at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course and a pair of former Buckeyes competed in the event. Bo Hoag, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, made his professional debut at the tournament and finished with a 3-over 145 (77-68) to miss the cut by three strokes. Former Buckeye Ryan Armour (1995-98) also competed and carded a 4-over 146.
Five Buckeyes competed in the Ohio Amateur Championship, July 11-15, at the NCR Country Club in Dayton. Recent graduate Michael Cress tallied a 72-hole total of 2-over 286 to finish tied for third, while Jones shot a 5-over 289 to tie for fifth. Rising junior Gary Quinn fired a 296 and Timko finished with a 298 to tie for 17th and 26th, respectively. Upcoming senior Michael Kinkopf just missed the final cut and tallied a three-day total of 235.
Also competing in a state amateur event was rising junior Jamie Sindelar. The Horseheads, N.Y., product secured a third-place finish at the New York State Amateur Championship at the Oak Hill Country Club. Sindelar had scores of 73-70-68-75 to total 6-over 286.
On Monday, rising senior Alex Redfield and Jones competed for a spot at the U.S. Amateur Championships as the pair teed off in the sectional qualifier at the Marion Country Club in Marion, Ohio. Redfield shot a 1-under 141 to tie for ninth, while Jones tied for 11th with an even 142.
