COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior diver Katie Bell, from Columbus and Graham High School, will compete this weekend at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix meet at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Bell, who recently capped her Ohio State career with an honorable mention All-America honor at the 2011 NCAA championships, will compete on the 10-meter platform and the synchronized 10-meter event with Jessica Parrato.
Ball has won two USA Diving national championships: on synchro 10-meter platform at the 2011 Winter Nationals in Iowa City, Iowa; and on 10-meter platform in 2009 in Tallahassee, Fla.
Regularly one of the top international diving competitions in the world, this year’s USA Diving Grand Prix features nearly 150 divers, including 47 Olympians, from 25 countries. The field includes U.S. Olympians David Boudia, Kelci Bryant, Troy Dumais, Mary Beth Dunnichay, Thomas Finchum, and Christina Loukas, a number of Olympic gold medalists from diving powerhouse China, Olympic gold medalist Matthew Mitcham of Australia, World Champion Tom Daley of Great Britain, World Cup champion and Olympic medalist Sascha Klein of Germany, several other Olympic and World medalists and a number of top Olympic hopefuls for the 2012 Games in London.
For Bell and the rest of Team USA divers, the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix will serve as the final phase in the selection process to determine the divers who will represent the United States in the individual Olympic events at the FINA World Championships in July. Divers were selected to the Grand Prix team based on results at February’s USA Diving Winter National Championships. For selection purposes, 50 percent of a diver’s cumulative score from the winter nationals quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be added to the preliminary score at the Grand Prix, and the two divers with the highest scores on each 3-meter and 10-meter event will be selected to the World Championships team. USA Diving will select the rosters for the 1-meter and synchronized events at a separate trials event May 12-15 in Tallahassee, Fla.
