Cousar, Manning Qualify for Quarterfinals After Day One – Ohio State Buckeyes

Birmingham sets PR in last race as a Buckeye
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – As day one of competition at the 2011 NCAA East Regional Preliminaries wrapped up, the Big Ten champion Buckeyes saw two Buckeyes qualify for Friday’s quarterfinals.
In her first appearance at the NCAA East preliminaries in an individual event, sophomore Nyjah Cousar qualified for the quarterfinals in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.23. Ti’erra Brown of Miami (Florida) won the preliminaries in 56.39.
All-American Christina Manning is headed for Friday’s quarterfinals in the 100m dash after running an 11.78 in the prelims for 18th place overall and third in her heat. Fellow All-American Madison McNary narrowly missed the cut running an 11.77 in her heat. Rounding out the Buckeye contingent in the 100m dash was Chesna Sykes, who finished the race in 11.87. Louisiana State’s Kenyanna Wilson had the fastest time of 11.25.
Junior and All-American Shaniqua McGinnis ended her season with a 55.66 400m dash performance in Thursday’s prelims. Ebony Eutsey from Florida ran a 52.64 to lead the way to the quarterfinals.
To wrap up her Ohio State career, senior Ellen Birmingham set a new personal record in the 10000m run with a time of 35:13.43. The fastest time in the prelims was recorded by West Virginia’s Kate Harrison (33:48.64).
Buckeye throwers Alexis Thomas and All-American Maggie Mullen both competed in the hammer throw on opening day of the meet. Thomas finished with a mark of 53.85m (176-08) and Mullen finished with a throw of 52.04m (170-09).
The Buckeyes will be competing in seven events Friday. Action is scheduled to resume from Bloomington at 11 a.m. ET.
