COLUMBUS, Ohio – Samantha Cheverton, a senior on the Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team, and Carolin Helmholz, a senior on the Ohio State rowing team, were both named to the 2011 Capital One Second Team Academic All-District IV team.
Cheverton has been the Most Valuable Swimmer for the Buckeyes all four years. She capped her fabulous four-year career this year by winning the Big Ten Conference championship in the 200 freestyle while helping the Buckeyes to a 17-year-best third-place finish. This eight-time school record holder then earned four honorable mention All-America awards while helping Ohio State to a 17th-place finish at the NCAA championships. Sam, who graduated in December with a degree in psychology, is a two-time Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a four-time OSU Scholar Athlete. A member of the Canadian National Swimming Team, Sam will compete in China this summer at the World Championships and then hopes to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
Helmholz has been part of the First Varsity Eight throughout the 2011 season. Majoring in hospitality management, Helmholz and the 1V8 were instrumental in helping the Buckeyes win the program’s third Big Ten Conference championship May 15 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind. So far, the 1V8 has a 14-7 record and will next lead the Scarlet and Gray at the 2011 Division I NCAA Championships on Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
