COLUMBUS, Ohio – Alicia Herron, a junior co-captain shortstop on the Ohio State softball team, was named a third team All-Big Ten selection, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. Herron, a native of Cypress, Calif., claims her third-consecutive league honor, becoming the 10th Buckeye in program history and seventh player under head coach Linda Kalafatis to be honored at least three times as an All-Big Ten award winner.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that Alicia Herron is one of the top players in the Big Ten Conference, ” Kalafatis said. “She endured the passing of her mother just a few weeks ago, yet found a way to play hard all season for the Buckeyes. It was a tough year for the team due to injuries, but we’ll be back strong and Alicia is one of the reasons why.”
Herron is joined by senior co-captain Dee Dee Hillman, who was named the 2011 Ohio State Sportsmanship Honoree. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
After being named a Second Team All-Big Ten selection as a freshman and a First Team All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore, Herron continued to lead the Buckeyes this season in multiple offensive categories to be named a conference award winner in 2011. In conference action, she led Big Ten shortstops in games played and starts (20), doubles (5) and slugging percentage (.660), while second in home runs (4), total bases (35) and RBI (8).
Overall, Herron led the Buckeyes in batting average (.352), games played and starts (51), runs scored (39), hits (52), doubles (11), triples (4), home runs (9), total bases (98), slugging percentage (.667), walks (30), on-base percentage (.472) and stolen bases (10).
