Ohio State in Third at the End of Day One at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Ohio State women’s track and field team sits in third place at the conclusion of the first day of competition at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, hosted by the University of Iowa.
With 11 total points, the defending Big Ten indoor champions trail Indiana (31 points) and Michigan State (17 points) after three events. Penn State, Purdue, and Iowa are in a three-way tie for fourth with 10 points.
Junior All-American Maggie Mullen and sophomore Alexis Thomas collected the 11 team points for the Buckeyes on day one with impressive performances in the hammer throw. Mullen shattered her PR to capture the bronze medal and six points at 58.51m (191-11), while Thomas used a 57.88m (189-11) throw to collect five points and a fourth-place finish. Michigan State’s Beth Rohl won the hammer title with a facility record mark of 60.28m (197-9).

Heptathlon
Senior Alana Gray leads the field after four events with a total of 3336 points, posting PRs in the 100m hurdles (13.69), high jump (1.67m/5-5.75), and 200m (25.41) in the process. Ashley Galbraith finds herself in fifth place with 3061 points thanks to a win in the high jump (1.76m/5-9.25), while Camai Brandenberg is in 10th (2740 points).

Ellen Birmingham recorded a ninth-place time of 35:43.63 for the Scarlet and Gray. Penn State’s Kara Millhouse won the race in 35:02.33.
