Scouting Denison
The Big Red men’s team is off to a fantastic start to the 2011-2012 swimming year. Denison is 2-0 in dual meets and had a first place win in the Kenyon Relays, where it broke four meet records. Last season Denison ended a 31-year national championship reign of Kenyon College, defeating the Lords in the closest finish in the history of the Division III national championship 500.5 – 499.5.
On the women’s side, Denison is also off to a strong start. The 2-0 Big Red took the runner-up spot in the Kenyon Relays. Denison returns 14 national qualifiers from last season’s NCAA runner-up squad and won its third straight North Coast Athletics Conference championship last season, finishing the 2010-11 campaign 3-2 in dual meets.
Scouting Cleveland State
The Viking men’s team also enters the meet undefeated on the year, boasting a 2-0 dual-meet record. Cleveland State features the Horizon League `Diver of the Week’ in Josh Gonzalez, his second award of the season. Ohio State will look to improve its streak of 58 consecutive victories vs. in-state opponents against Cleveland State and Denison.
Ohio State head coach Bill Dorenkott’s alma mater comes to McCorkle with two dual meet victories as well as a third-place finish at the Michigan State Long Course Invitational. The Viking women are coming off a key win vs. Horizon League powerhouse Green Bay, which is Cleveland State’s second consecutive win over the program. With the win, junior Joanna Olsson was named Horizon League `Swimmer of the Week,’ the second such honor of her career.
Scouting Virginia Tech
The Hokie men enter the meet with a 4-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of North Carolina. Virginia Tech recorded the first win in program history over Florida State last Saturday.
The Virginia Tech women’s team is coming off a solid effort last weekend with wins over ACC rival Duke and UNC Wilmington to improve its record to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference competition.
