Hoag fires a 6-under 65 and leads the team, four players card rounds in 60s Tuesday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – With just over a week until its first tournament of the fall season, the Ohio State men’s golf team opened its four-day, five-round qualifying tournament Tuesday with some stellar scores during 36 holes at Scarlet Course.
Among the scores was a 65 by senior Bo Hoag in the first round. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native has led the team in fall qualifying each of the previous three seasons and has a one-stroke lead after two rounds.
“I am really pleased with the start of qualifying,” Donnie Darr, who is in his second year at the helm of the Buckeyes, said. “We had some good scores on a pretty difficult day. It was great to see our upper classmen step up and lead the way. Bo’s 65 was a great round of golf!”
Also turning in scores in the 60s were junior Dan Charen with a 68 and seniors Michael Cress and Brad Smith each with a 69. Charen is in second overall with a sum of 139, followed by Jamie Sindelar (142), Smith (144) and Michael Kinkopf (144).
There always is incentive to aim low, but the Buckeyes are playing for a spot in a fall tournament lineup as well as their new golf bags which are earned by a round of 69 or lower.
“It was really nice to see some guys go out and earn their bag today,” Darr said. “Michael Cress did it in the most impressive fashion, holing a 9 iron from the rough on his final hole of the day.”
Fall qualifying continues with single rounds Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Tournament action begins Sept. 13-14 when the Buckeyes travel to Huntington, W.Va., to open the 2010-11 season at the Marshall Invitational.
