WVB: Buckeyes Fall, 3-1, to 16th-Ranked Kentucky at the Kentucky Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (5-1 overall) women’s volleyball team lost a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 27-25, 25-20) decision at 16th-ranked Kentucky (4-2) in the final match of the Kentucky Classic in Lexington, Ky. OSU’s Katie Dull posted a team-high 16 points on 16 kills with Kelli Barhorst and Anna Szerszen adding 10.5 points each. Barhorst had nine kills, a solo block and one assist block with Szerszen recording nine kills, one ace serve and one assist block. For Kentucky, Whitney Billings had a match-high 16.5 points in the match with 15 kills, a solo block and one assist block. Lauren Rapp had 15.5 points with 12 kills, a solo block and five assists with Becky Pavan adding 14.5 points with 10 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and five assist blocks.
Kentucky opened set one with a 2-0 lead off an OSU error and a kill from Billings. Trailing, 7-4, Buckeye kills from Betsy Hone, Mariah Booth and Szerszen tie the set at seven. A Wildcat error and a Szerszen kill gave OSU a 9-7 lead. At 11-9, a Rapp block and a kill by Billings tied the set at 11. Tied at 17, Kentucky scored the final eight points of the set to win 25-17 with a kill from Billings to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Wildcats hit .324 for the set to .128 for Ohio State.
Set two saw five lead changes and 10 ties. At 19-all, a kill from Dull and a Kentucky error gave Ohio State a 21-19 lead. A Pavan kill and an OSU error tied the set at 21. A kill from Emily Danks with a Wildcat error gave the Buckeyes a 23-21 lead. Ohio State reached set point at 24-21 with a kill from Dull. A Buckeye error stopped the first set point but a Kentucky error ended the set for a 25-22 OSU win and tied the match at one set each. In the set, Kentucky outhit Ohio State, .189 to .182.
Ohio State opened the third set with a 4-0 lead off two Kentucky errors, a Sarah Mignin ace serve and a Barhorst kill. The Buckeyes took a four-point lead at 21-17 with a kill from Hone and a Kaitlyn Leary solo block. A 6-2 Wildcat run tied the set at 23. A kill from Rapp gave Kentucky set point at 24-23. Barhorst, with a kill, tied the set at 24. Ohio State, with a Dull kill, took a 25-24 lead and had set point. Kentucky tied the set at 25 with a Blaire Hiler kill. A Buckeye error made it 26-25 with Kentucky serving a second set point. The Wildcats, with a kill from Rapp, won the set, 27-25, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Wildcats hit .189 in the set to .047 for Ohio State.
Kentucky opened the fourth set with a kill from Rapp, a Rapp-Gretchen Giesler block and a Pavan ace serve for a 3-0 lead. A kill from Dull and a Wildcat error made it 3-2. After a kill from Rapp, Danks, with a kill and ace serve, tied the set at four. Kills from Hiler and Billings and an OSU error gave Kentucky a 7-4 lead. A kill from Hone and a Hone-Allie Schwarzwalder block made it 7-6. An OSU error made it 8-6. Two kills from Dull and two Wildcat errors gave Ohio State a 10-8 lead. At 11-9, two OSU errors tied the set at 11. Tied at 13, kills from Billings and Giesler gave Kentucky a 15-13 lead. Ohio State trailed 22-15 when a Kentucky error and kills from Dull and Leary cut the lead to four at 22-18. A Buckeye error and a kill from Dull made it 23-19 Kentucky. OSU cut the lead to three at 23-30 with a kill from Hone. Christine Hartmann, with a kill, gave Kentucky a 24-20 lead serving match point. The Wildcats won the set, 25-20, with a block from Rapp and Pavan to win the match, 3-1. Kentucky hit .321 for the set to .161 for Ohio State.
For the match, Kentucky hit .250 to .127 for Ohio State. The Wildcats had a 55-53 edge in kills while Ohio State had a 46-45 margin in assists. Hartmann had a match-high 41 assists for the Wildcats with OSU’s Hone recording 39. The Buckeyes had a 5-3 advantage in ace serves with OSU’s Danks and Mignin recording two each. Each squad gave up seven service errors. Defensively, the Wildcats had a 59-53 edge in digs with Stephanie Klefot recording a match-high 18 for Kentucky. OSU’s Dull posted a team-high 13 digs. At the net, Kentucky had a 15-5 margin in team blocks. Pavan and Rapp posted a match-high six blocks each with a solo and five assists.
Ohio State’s Dull and Hone were named to the Kentucky Classic All-Tournament Team. Also named to the team were Jiberia Davis of South Florida, Amy Rasman of Miami (Ohio) and Klefot and Blaire Hiler for the Wildcats. Named the most valuable player was Rapp of Kentucky.
Next week Ohio State travels to Baltimore, Md. to play in the UMBC Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament. The Buckeyes face Brown at 2 p.m. and host UMBC at 7 p.m. Friday and play Sacred Heart at 1:30 p.m. and Towson at 7 p.m. Saturday.
