WVB: Buckeyes Sweep South Florida at the Kentucky Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (4-0 overall) women’s volleyball team, with four players recording double-figure points defeated South Florida (1-2) Friday night at the Kentucky Classic in Lexington, Ky. OSU’s Emily Danks posted a match-high 14.5 points with 10 kills (.562), three ace serves, one solo block and one assist block with Anna Szerszen adding 11.5 points with eight kills (.615), two ace serves and three assist blocks. Kelli Barhorst had 10.5 points with eight kills (.214), one ace serve and three assist blocks. Katie Dull added 10 points on 10 kills (.200) for the Buckeyes. South Florida’s Maija Strazdina scored a team-high nine points for the Bulls with nine kills (.172).
The Buckeyes opened set one with kills from Dull and Barhorst and with a Bull error took a 3-0 lead. Ohio State, at 9-7, expanded the lead with a four-point run started with a kill by Danks. A kill by Dull, two ace serves from Szerszen and a Bull error gave Ohio State a 13-7 lead. At 17-11, three South Florida errors and a Barhorst-Betsy Hone block expanded the lead to 21-11. The Buckeyes reached set point at 24-14 with an error by South Florida. A Buckeye error made it 24-15. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-15, with a kill from Danks to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .321 for the set to -.069 for the Bulls.
South Florida broke a 2-2 tie in set two with six consecutive points to open an 8-2 lead. At 9-3, kills from Barhorst and Szerszen and a Szerszen-Barhorst block cut the Bull lead to three at 9-6. Three OSU errors and one from South Florida made it 12-7 Bulls. At 13-8, the Buckeyes scored the next eight points to open a 16-13 lead. The run began with kills from Dull and Danks and an ace serve from Hone. The run continued with kills from Szerszen and Mariah Booth, a Danks solo block, a Hone ace serve and a Bull error. An OSU error, a Mariana Thon ace serve and a Caitlyn Breen kill tied the set at 16. Tied at 17, OSU kills from Danks and Barhorst gave Ohio State a 19-17 lead. At 20-18, a Hone kill and an ace serve from Danks gave the Buckeyes a 22-18 lead. A kill from Bull Allie Boaz and one from Barhorst made it 23-19, OSU. South Florida cut the lead to three at 23-20 with a Strazdina kill. A Bull service error gave Ohio State set point a 24-20. An OSU error made it 24-21. Ohio State took a 2-0 lead in the match with a Booth kill for a 25-21 set victory. OSU hit .296 for the set to .273 for South Florida.
The Bulls, with a J’beria Davis kill and two OSU errors took a 3-0 lead to open the third set. A kill from Danks made it 3-1. Three consecutive kills from Andrea Rodriguez Gomez gave South Florida a 6-1 lead. Trailing, 8-4, kills from Hone and Dull and a Hone-Booth block cut the South Florida lead to one at 8-7. The Bulls, with two kills from Davis, one from Strazdina and an OSU error to expanded their lead to 12-7. A Barhorst-Szerszen block again cut the South Florida lead to one at 17-16. A Strazdina kill and a Jessica Burghart ace serve made it 19-16 South Florida. The Buckeyes, with two kills from Szerszen and one from Booth tied the set at 19. Ohio State continued the run with an ace serve from Barhorst and two South Florida errors to take a 22-19 lead. Kills from Strazdina and Szerszen made it 23-20. Errors by both teams gave Ohio State match point at 24-21. Davis, with a kill, stopped the match point at 24-22. Ohio State ended the set, 25-22, with a kill from Danks to earn a 3-0 sweep over South Florida. OSU hit .370 for the set to .188 for the Bulls.
For the match, Ohio State hit .329 to .120 for South Florida. The Buckeyes had a 42-27 margin in kills and a 37-24 advantage in assists. Hone posted a match-high 34 assists against the Bulls. Ohio State out served South Florida with eight aces to four. Danks recorded a match-high three aces for the Buckeyes. OSU gave up 11 service errors to five for South Florida. Defensively, OSU had a 32-22 margin in digs with OSU’s Sarah Mignin recording a match-high seven digs. At the net, Ohio State had an eight to 2.5 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Booth recorded a match-high four assist blocks in the contest.
Ohio State continues play at the Kentucky Classic with a 1 p.m. Saturday match against Miami (Ohio). The Buckeyes close out play in a 7:30 p.m. match against host and 16th-ranked Kentucky.
