Senior from Upper Arlington closes with career-low to place second in individual standings
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team came out firing on all cylinders Monday for the final round of the Windon Memorial with a pair of seniors leading the way. The Buckeyes closed the two-day, 54-hole event with the best team score of the day at 9-under 275 led by Bo Hoag’s 64 and Brad Smith’s 69.
Ohio State battled at the top of the leaderboard with Big Ten rival Michigan, but the Wolverines took the title by a shot. The Buckeyes were second with a total of 855 (+3) on the par 71, 7,067 yard North Shore Country Club. While Ohio State was edged by Michigan, it finished 13 strokes ahead of the next highest-ranking Big Ten team.
Individually, Hoag concluded the Windon Memorial with a stellar round. The senior from Upper Arlington, Ohio posted a career-low 7-under 64 to drive the Buckeyes up the leaderboard. Besting his previous low by three shots, Hoag had a birdie filled day with a total of eight in the round. After opening birdie-bogey, he rattled in five birdies in his next six holes, then made par on the next eight holes before closing birdie-birdie.
“I got off to good start,” Hoag said. “After the bogey on the second hole, I just kept putting myself into good spots for birdies. Closing out birdie-birdie was a good finish, too. I hit it close on 17 and 18, which are tough holes, but I was able to make two 15-footers.”
“We knew had to go under-par to put some pressure on,” Hoag said about the team’s mindset in the final round. “We had a good game plan and we knew what needed to do. We did a pretty good job executing it, but just finished shot short.”
Hoag’s round vaulted him up the standings and after starting the day tied for 18th, he finished it as runner-up with a total of 4-under 209. He was just two shots back from the Wolverines’ Lion Kim, who maintained the individual lead throughout the day and was medalist at 6-under.
Smith also concluded the tournament with a solid round. The Peru, Ind., native was 1-under through his first 10 holes and balanced four birdies with just two bogeys in the final round to put him in tie for 12th at 2-over.
In his first tournament of the year, Matt Turner played consistently throughout the three rounds, capping it off with a 1-over 72 in the final round to put him in a tie for 19th place. The sophomore from Dubai, UAE, was 4-over for the event.
Finishing the tournament on a high note was Alex Redfield. The sophomore from Columbus opened his round with three-consecutive birdies and finished the final day with a 1-under 70. He bounced back from a tough opening day and finished 10-over in a tie for 47th place.
Sophomore Jamie Sindelar finished in a tie for 36th after a final round of 5-over 76. The Horseheads, N.Y., native was 7-over for the tournament.
Up next, Ohio State concludes its fall schedule by hosting the Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Oct. 11-12 at Scioto Country Club.
