WVB: Buckeyes Sweep Kennesaw State to Win Owl Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (12-1 overall) won the Owl Invitational with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-18) victory over host Kennesaw State (6-8) Saturday night in the KSU Convocation Center. OSU’s Katie Dull posted 16.5 points and Anna Szerszen, 10.5 to lead the Buckeyes. Dull recorded 12 kills (.310), one ace serve, two solo blocks and three assist blocks while Szerszen recorded 10 kills (.529) and one assist block. Sabrita Gulley posted a team-high 8.5 points for the Owls with eight kills (.217) and one assist block.
Ohio State broke a 1-1 tie in set one with a five-point run starting with an ace serve from Emily Danks. After an Owl error and an Allie Schwarzwalder kill, a second ace from Danks completed the run. At 17-13 Buckeyes, two Owl errors forced a Kennesaw State time out. After a Gulley kill (19-14), a solo block by Dull and two Dull kills gave Ohio State a 22-14 lead. A Grace Hoyt kill cut the OSU lead to 22-15. A Schwarzwalder kill and an Owl error made it set point for OSU at 24-15. A Buckeye error made it 24-16. Ohio State won the set, 25-16 with a kill from Schwarzwalder to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .312 for the set to .065 for the Owls.
Kennesaw State held a 3-1 lead in set two before a kill from Danks and a Dull-Schwarzwalder block tied the set at three. A Dull kill and an Owl error gave Ohio State a 5-3 lead. Kills from Hoyt and Baylee Strachan tied the set at five. Two Schwarzwalder kils gave OSU a 7-5 lead. A Sara Metroka kill cut the lead to one at 7-6 but a Mariah Booth solo block and an Owl error opened a 9-6 Buckeye lead. OSU expanded a 12-9 lead with two kills from Szerszen and one from Booth for a 15-9 lead. Leading, 20-13, a kill from Szerszen, a Schwarzwalder ace serve, a Booth kill and an Owl error gave OSU set point at 24-13. A Gulley kill stopped the set point at 24-14. Ohio State won the set, 25-14, with a Dull kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .355 for the set to -.075 for Kennesaw State.
With the third set tied at three, kills from Dull and Betsy Hone, a Dull ace serve, an Owl error and a Dull kill opened an 8-3 Buckeye lead. At 13-9, two kills from Dull, a Dull solo block and an Owl error gave Ohio State a 17-9 lead. OSU held an 18-13 lead when two kills from Hone, her solo block, an Owl error and a Hone-Schwarzwalder block gave the Buckeyes a 23-13 lead. Errors by both teams set match point for Ohio State at 24-14. Kennesaw State, with two Gulley kills and two OSU errors stopped four match points to cut the lead to 24-18. A kill from Booth won the set, 25-18, to give Ohio State a 3-0 victory in the match. The Buckeyes hit .346 in the set to .107 for the Owls.
Ohio State hit .337 in the match to .020 for Kennesaw State. The Buckeyes had a 41-26 advantage in kills and a 37-25 margin in assists. OSU’s Hone recorded a match-high 32 assists in the match. The Buckeyes had a 4-2 edge in ace serves with Danks recording a match-high two for OSU. Ohio State gave up eight service errors to six for the Owls. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 38-35 margin in digs with OSU’s Sarah Mignin producing a match-high 10. At the net, Ohio State had a 9-3 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Dull recorded a match-high five total blocks with two solos and three assist blocks.
Ohio State’s Szerszen earned most valuable player honors at the Owl Invitational with Booth and Dull named to the all-tournament team. Also named to the all-tournament team were Gulley and Metroka of Kennesaw State, Meghan Laffin of Coastal Carolina, Megan Henderson and Natasha Kolunija of Troy and Presley Mabrey of Presbyterian.
Ohio State begins Big Ten Conference play next week when they travel to Wisconsin (11-0) Friday and fifth-ranked Illinois (8-2) Saturday.
