Ohio State Concludes Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational in Seventh – Ohio State Buckeyes

Seniors Bo Hoag and Brad Smith place in top 20
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Competing in its fifth round of tournament play in the last seven days, the Ohio State men’s golf team concluded the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational in seventh place with a 54-hole total of 865 (+25) Sunday in Olympia Fields, Ill.
The Buckeyes had a tough go in the final round with a team score of 14-over 294, but finished the tournament as the highest Big Ten team in the standings topping No. 16 Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern and Indiana.
The tournament featured a tough 15-team field on an historical course. No. 8 Florida won the tournament at 5-over on the par 70, 7,205-yard North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club. Top-ranked Oklahoma State and defending NCAA champion Augusta State tied for second at 12-over, followed by No. 15 Alabama (+17), No. 11 Texas (+18) and No. 19 Duke (+21).
The No. 1-rated player in college golf, Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State, ran away with medalist honors at 6-under.
Leading the Buckeyes during the final round was senior Brad Smith with an even 70. The Peru, Ind., product had a steady day during which he balanced three bogeys with three birdies. After starting the tournament with at 76, Smith battled back the next two rounds and worked his way into a tie for 16th at 214 (+4).
A stroke ahead of Smith overall was fellow senior Bo Hoag, who tied for 11th at 213. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native struggled out of the gates and was 5-over on his first four holes, but then settled down and was only 1-over for the rest of his round for a 76.
Juniors Alex Redfield and Dan Charen both had a final round of 75 after difficulty with the back nine. Redfield, from Columbus, tied for 41st at 11-over, while Charen, from Langhorne, Pa., tied for 45th at 12-over.
Jamie Sindelar finished the tournament with his best round of 4-over 74. The sophomore from Horseheads, N.Y., tied for 68th at 18-over.
Ohio State will continue its fall schedule Sept. 26-27 at the Windon Memorial Classic in Glenview, Ill., before playing host to the Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Oct. 11-12 at Scioto Country Club.
