WVB: Buckeyes Defeat Sacred Heart, 3-1, to Remain Undefeated at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (8-1 overall) women’s volleyball team overcame a first set loss (29-27) to Sacred Heart (5-4) to defeat the Pioneers, 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament in RAC Arena in Baltimore, Md. OSU’s Katie Dull posted a match-high 18 points in the match with 15 kills (.316) and six assist blocks. Allie Schwarzwalder added 16.5 points with 10 kills (.389), one ace serve and 10 total blocks (1-9) while Anna Szerszen contributed 11.5 points with eight kills (.263), two solo blocks and three assists. Dianis Mercado had a team-high 12 points for Sacred Heart with 10 kills and two ace serves.
The first set of the match saw six lead changes and 12 ties. The Buckeyes held a 23-19 lead when two OSU errors and a Christina Bauch ace serve cut the Ohio State lead to one. After a Buckeye time out, a Sacred Heart error gave OSU set point at 24-22. An Ohio State error and a Johanna Ovsenek kill tied the set at 24. A Dull kill gave OSU a 25-24 lead and their third set point. Another Buckeye error tied the set at 25. Sacred Heart took a 26-25 lead off an OSU error for set point. Danks, with a kill, tied the set at 26. An Ovsenek kill made it 27-26 Sacred Heart serving a second set point. OSU tied the set at 27 with a kill from Danks. An Ashley Trimble kill made it 28-27 Pioneers serving a third set point. Bauch, with a kill, won the set 29-27 to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .118 in the set to .054 for the Pioneers.
Tied at three in the second set, Ohio State scored six consecutive points with two kills from Dull, three from Allie Schwarzwalder and an ace serve from Danks for a 9-3 lead. Sacred Heart cut into the Buckeye lead to trail 18-16. An OSU error and an Elise Sage ace serve tied the set at 18. A Buckeye error and an Allie Schwarzwalder kill tied the set at 19. A Pioneer error and a Mercado kill made it 20-all. An Ovsenek kill and a Mariah Booth solo block tied the set at 21. Blocks by Booth and Danks and Booth and Szerszen gave Ohio State a 23-21 lead. A Mercado kill cut the lead to one at 23-22. Szerszen, with a kill, made it 24-22 and set point Ohio State. The Buckeyes, with a Szerszen-Booth block, won the set 25-22, to tie the match at one set each. OSU hit .258 to .182 for Sacred Heart in the set.
Ohio State broke a 7-7 tie in set three with a four-point run to open an 11-7 lead. The run included kills from Dull and Danks, a Booth-Danks block and a Pioneer error. At 12-8, an OSU error cut the lead to three at 12-9. A Trimble kill made it 12-10. With a Dull kill, a Dull-Allie Schwarzwalder block and two aces serves from Sarah Mignin, the Buckeyes took a 16-10 lead. Trailing, 23-15, an OSU error and a Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek ace serve cut the lead to six at 23-17. Ohio State, with a Szerszen kill, reached set point at 24-17. Sacred Heart stopped four set points with kills from Trimble and Kidd-Kadlubek and two Mercado ace serves to cut the lead to three at 24-21. Ohio State closed out the set, 25-21, with a kill from Danks to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .458 for the set to .037 for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart opened the fourth set with a Mercado kill, a Bauch-Trimble block and an OSU error for a 3-0 lead. A Pioneer error, a Mignin ace serve and an Allie Schwarzwalder-Dull block tied the set at three. A Mercado kill and an OSU error gave Sacred Heart a 5-3 lead. A Danks-Allie Schwarzwalder block and a Schwarzwalder solo block tied the set at five. A Pioneer error and a kill from Dull gave Ohio State a 7-5 lead. Sacred Heart closed to within one at 11-10 off a Bauch kill. Kills from Szerszen and Dull started a five point OSU scoring run. It continued with a Booth-Danks block, a Pioneer error and a Booth-Dull block for a 16-10 lead. OSU held the lead to reach match point at 24-17 off a Sacred Heart error. An Ovsenek kill stopped the match point at 24-18. A Pioneer service error ended the match with OSU winning the set, 25-18 and the match, 3-1. OSU hit .065 for the set to -.100 for the Pioneers.
Ohio State hit .208 for the match to .036 for Sacred Heart. OSU had a 46-44 margin in kills while the Pioneers had a 43-42 edge in assists. Kidd-Kadlubek posted a match-high 37 assists for Sacred Heart. The Pioneers had a 7-5 advantage in ace serves with OSU’s Mignin posting a match-high three. The Buckeyes gave up 14 service errors to 10 for Sacred Heart. Each squad had 46 digs in the contest with Jessica Colberg recording a match-high 16 and OSU’s Mignin posting a team-high 15. At the net, Ohio State had a 22-4 margin in team blocks. Allie Schwarzwalder posted a match-high 10 total blocks with a solo and nine assists. Booth contributed nine blocks with a solo and eight assists.
Ohio State faces Towson at 7 p.m. in the final match of the tournament Saturday.
