WVB: Buckeyes Capture Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament with a Sweep of Towson – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (9-1 overall) women’s volleyball team finished undefeated (4-0) at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-14) victory over Towson (10-3) in the RAC Arena in Baltimore, Md. The tournament was hosted by UMBC and Towson. OSU’s Allie Schwarzwalder had a match-high 14 points in the match with five kills, four ace serves and nine total blocks (1-8). Katie Dull added 13.5 points with eight kills, three ace serves and five assist blocks. Emily Danks contributed 10 kills, one ace serve and four assist blocks for OSU. Towson’s Shelynne Hoyt posted a team-high 10.5 points with seven kills, two ace serves and three assist blocks.
A kill from Danks and a Dull-Allie Schwarzwalder block opened the first set to give OSU a 2-0 lead. At 4-2 OSU, a Susan Gansor kill made the lead one at 4-3. Two Tiger errors and two kills from Betsy Hone gave Ohio State an 8-3 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead reaching set point at 24-13 with an Allie Schwarzwalder-Dull block. Danks, with an ace serve, ended the set at 25-13 to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .619 to .304 for Towson.
In a close set two that saw five lead changes and 13 ties, Towson broke an 18-all tie with a Kelsey Hoefer-Hoyt block and kills from Hoefer and Katy Buck for a 21-18 Tiger lead. Two kills from Danks made it 21-20. A Hoefer-Hoyt block made it 22-20. A Tiger error and a Mignin ace serve tied the set at 22. A Britney Loomis kill and a Hoyt ace serve gave Towson set point at 24-22. OSU stopped two set points with a Dull kill and an Allie Schwarzwalder-Hone block at 24-all. A Hoefer-Gansor block gave Towson a second set point at 25-24. A Tiger error tied the set at 25. A solo block from Anna Szerszen gave Ohio State set point at 26-25. A Buckeye error tied the set at 26. OSU earned a second set point with an Allie Schwarzwalder kill at 27-26. Gansor, with a kill tied the set at 27. A Lauren Tonokawa ace serve made it 28-27 Towson. A Szerszen kill stopped a third set point for Towson tying the set at 28. OSU, with a Mariah Booth-Danks block took a 29-28 lead. The Buckeyes, off a Towson error, won the set, 30-28 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .182 for the set to .081 for Towson.
Ohio State exploded to a 10-0 start to begin the third set. The run began with two kills each from Danks and Dull. Two Mignin ace serves, two Towson errors, a Danks-Allie Schwarzwalder block and a triple block from Danks, Allie Schwarzwalder and Dull made it 10-0. The Buckeyes held the lead reaching match point at 24-12 with an Allie Schwarzwalder ace serve. Towson, with a Loomis kill and a Luana Rocha ace serve stopped two match points to make it 24-14. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-14, with a kill from Mariah Booth to win the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .348 for the set to -.042 for the Tigers.
Ohio State hit .351 for the match to .107 for Towson. OSU had a 38-32 margin in kills and a 34-31 edge in assists. OSU’s Hone posted a match-high 30 assists. The Buckeyes had a 12-4 advantage in ace serves with Allie Schwarzwalder posting a match-high four. OSU gave up eight service errors to seven for the Tigers. Defensively, Towson had a 27-20 advantage in digs with Tiger Tonokawa recording a match-high 10. At the net, Ohio State had a 13.5 to four margin in team blocks. Allie Schwarzwalder collected a match-high nine blocks with a solo and eight assists.
OSU’s Dull was named the most valuable player of the tournament with teammate Allie Schwarzwalder named to the all-tournament team. Included on the team were Ashlyn Trimble and Johanna Ovsenek of Sacred Heart, Nicole Brown of Howard, Gansor of Towson, Sabrina Hoeks of UMBC and Katrina Post of Brown. Ohio State won the tournament with a 4-0 record. Sacred Heart finished second at 3-1.
The Buckeyes continue on the road next weekend with a trip to the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational in Kennesaw, Ga. At 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 Ohio State plays Presbyterian. Saturday at 10 a.m., the Buckeyes face Coastal Carolina and close out the tournament at 7 p.m. playing host Kennesaw State.
