Ohio State Opens Fall Season at Marshall Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

After a week of fall qualifying, Buckeyes begin tournament action in West Virginia
COLUMBUS, Ohio – After wrapping up a week of fall qualifying to determine its lineup, the Ohio State men’s golf team travels to Huntington, W.Va., to open its 2010-11 schedule at the Marshall Invitational Sept 13-14. The 54-hole tournament will consist of two rounds with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Monday and a final round with tee times off Nos. 1 and 10 starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament is being held at the par 71, 6,456-yard Guyan Country Club.

THE BUCKEYE LINEUP
Making their way to West Virginia for their first tournament of the season will be six Buckeyes – sophomore Jamie Sindelar, juniors Dan Charen and Alex Redfield and seniors Bo Hoag, Brad Smith and Michael Cress, who will be competing as an individual.

Ohio State held its annual fall qualifying tournament last week, playing five rounds between Sept. 7-10. Jamie Sindelar, a sophomore from Horseheads, N.Y., took the top spot with a score of 6-under 349 after closing with a 3-under 68, adding to his rounds of 70-72-67-72 during the week.
Runner-up was junior Dan Charen at 2-under and also concluded the week with a solid round of 69. Matching his final round score was senior Bo Hoag who took third at 1-over.Rounding out the top 5 were senior Brad Smith at 11-over and junior Alex Redfield at 12-over. Redfield capped off his impressive rebound – after opened qualifying with a 79, he was only 4-over through his next four rounds.

ABOUT THE MARSHALL INVITATIONAL
The Marshall Invitational was first held in 1968 and the 2010 version will be the 41st installment of the tournament. Over half over the field this season will be teams from the state of Ohio – Ohio State, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Miami, Ohio, Toledo, Wright State and Xavier.
BEEN THERE, WON THAT
Ohio State owns the most team titles at the Marshall Invitational with 17, winning in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2001, and 2004 in the 40-year history of the event. The Buckeyes also have been runner-up a total of seven times.
In the individual side of the tournament, Ohio State golfers have claimed 14 titles with the most recent one claimed by Kevin Hall in 2004. Jamie Sindelar’s father, Joey, won the Marshall Invitational in 1980.
A LOOK AT THE LINKS
The par 71 Guyan Golf Course was built in 1922 in the east section of Huntington, W.Va. The course has been the site of numerous tournaments including U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open Qualifiers and the Marshall University Invitational. Guyan has also hosted several West Virginia Opens. The first, in 1936, was won by Sam Snead, who also qualified for his first U.S. Open at the course.
THE NEW GUY
Ryan Potter joined the Ohio State men’s golf team Aug. 5 as an assistant coach. He came to the Buckeyes after two years as an assistant coach at the University of Mississippi and a year as a volunteer coach at the University of Alabama. He is a second generation golf coach as the son of Alabama women’s golf coach Mic Potter.
A four-year letterwinner at Furman University, Potter graduated with a degree in history and received his masters in sports management from Alabama in May 2008.
