WVB: Buckeyes Defeat Brown, 3-0, at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (6-1 overall) women’s volleyball team opened play at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament in Baltimore, Md., with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Brown (2-3) Friday afternoon at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Ohio State’s Katie Dull posted a match-high 12.5 points for the Buckeyes with a eight kills (.300), three ace serve, one solo block and one assist block. Kelli Barhorst had 10.5 points with 10 kills (.600) and one assist block while Allie Schwarzwalder added 10 points with eight kills (.250) and four assist blocks. Brown’s Emma Pastore scored a team-high eight points for the Bears with seven kills (.111) and one solo block.
With the first set tied at two, a kill from Betsy Hone and a Brown error gave Ohio State a 4-2 lead. Leading, 8-6, a Schwarzwalder kill, two ace serves from Katie Dull and a Brown error opened a 12-6 Buckeye lead. A Buckeye error made it 12-7 before a five-point run gave Ohio State a 17-7 lead. The run began with a kills from Schwarzwalder, Barhorst and Emily Danks. After a Brown timeout, a Barhorst-Danks block and a Barhorst kill completed the run. At 19-9, kills from Barhorst and Hone, an OSU error, another Barhorst kill and a Brown error made it 23-10. Katrina Post, with two kills cut the lead to 23-12. Ohio State reached set point at 24-12 with a kill from Dull. Hone, with an ace serve, ended the set at 25-12 to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .333 for the set to -.048 for the Bears.
Brown broke a 1-1 tie in the second set with kills from Amanda Nickel and Post for a 3-1 lead. At 4-2, kills from Hone and Barhorst and an Anna Szerszen ace serve gave Ohio State a 5-4 lead. Brown tied the set at five with a Nickel kill. OSU kills from Dull and Schwarzwalder and two Brown errors made it 9-5 Buckeyes. Leading 22-17, an ace serve from Dull, a Buckeye error, a Pastore kill and an Alexandra Rieckhoff ace serve cut the Buckeye lead to three at 23-20. A Brown error gave Ohio State set point at 24-20. The Buckeyes won the game, 25-20, with a Barhorst kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .226 for the set to .167 for the Bears.
In set three, a kill from Post and an OSU error gave Brown a 5-3 lead. Trailing, 6-4, a Dull kill and a Schwarzwalder-Hone block tied the set at six. An OSU error made it 7-6 Brown but OSU tied the set at seven with a kill from Schwarzwalder. A Danks-Schwarzwalder block and a Brown error made it 9-7, OSU. A kill from Post and an OSU error tied the set at nine. At 10-all, Buckeye kills from Schwarzwalder and Kaitlyn Leary and a Bear error gave the Buckeyes a 13-10 lead. Ohio State, leading, 20-17, scored four consecutive points to reach match point at 24-17. The run included a Brown error, two ace serves from Danks and a Leary kill. Brown stopped the match point with a Pastore kill at 24-18. Leary ended the set with a kill to win the set, 25-18, and sweep the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .323 for the set to .150 for the Bears.
For the match, Ohio State hit .292 to .092 for Brown. The Buckeyes had a 41-21 advantage in kills and a 36-21 margin in assists. Hone posted a match-high 30 assists for OSU. The Buckeyes had a 9-2 edge in ace serves with OSU’s Dull and Danks recording a match-high three each. The Buckeyes gave up 11 service errors to six for Brown. Defensively, the Bears had a 30-26 advantage in digs. Bear Annika Gliottone posted a match-high 11 digs while OSU’s Susan Halverson had a team-high seven for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 6-2 advantage in team blocks with Schwarzwalder posting a match-high four assist blocks.
Ohio State continues play in the tournament at 7 p.m. tonight when they face host UMBC (2-3) in the RAC Arena.
