COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chelsea Davis, the highly accomplished Ohio State diver from Columbus and Worthington Kilbourne High School, has been named a second-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Academic All-America selections are voted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America and must be at least in their second year at the institution with a grade-point average of 3.30 or higher.
The All-America honor was a most-fitting way for Davis, a health sciences major who will enroll this fall at Washington University in St. Louis to pursue a master’s in physical therapy, to cap a diving career that has been as memorable as any at Ohio State. Consider:
- She was the recipient of Ohio State’s 2010 Big Ten Medal of Honor award for attaining the greatest proficiency in both academics and athletics among women student-athletes.
- The Big Ten Conference awarded her its 2010 Wayne Duke Postgraduate Scholarship for her achievements in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and leadership.
- In 2008 while competing at her home pool, the spectacular and two-year-new McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, Davis won the NCAA championship on the three-meter springboard to become only the fourth NCAA champion in Ohio State diving history.
- She was named the NCAA Tri-Diver of the Year in 2008 after also earning All-America honors with an eighth-place finish on the one-meter event.
- Davis placed seventh on one-meter at the 2010 NCAA championships for a third All-America accolade.
- She was a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree.
- Competing as a freshman (before transferring to Ohio State) at Northwestern in 2006, Davis won a Big Ten title on the three-meter springboard.
- She was a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Board and volunteered with the Improving Literacy Program, Next Chapter Book Club and The Ohio State University Hospital.
- And Davis was an athlete representative for the USA Diving – Site Selection and Rules Committees.
Davis’ diving career also included the unbelievably painful – the loss of her mother in 2007 after a lengthy illness – and a terrible diving accident at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal.
Davis responded with outward grace and mental toughness from her adversities to compete at the highest level – the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials – and earn a spot in the finals on three-meter.
And today she can proudly look back on a remarkable career while looking forward to what looks to be a fulfilling future.
