Cheverton, Three Relays Top 10 at Nationals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Samantha Cheverton swam in a U.S. Short Course National Championships final for the second consecutive day and three Ohio State relays had Top 10 finishes to highlight the second day of action at this national meet being held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Ohio State sits in fifth-place among the 15 collegiate teams competing with 97 points. California leads with 428 points and USC is second with 349.
“A meet like this at home is a great opportunity to gauge where we are,” Ohio State coach Bill Dorenkott said. “We are ahead of where I thought we would be at this point in the season.”
Cheverton, who took the bronze medal in the 500 freestyle in school record time Thursday, placed sixth in the 200 freestyle Friday with a time of 1:45.62.
Ohio State’s 800 freestyle relay team of Anita Beck, Alex Norris, Cheverton and Megan Detro placed fourth with a time of 7:11.68.
The Buckeyes 200 medley relay team of Kelsey Moran, Angela Severn, Norris and Detro placed sixth in 1:41.08, and a second 200 medley relay of Cheverton, Catherine Eitel, Shannon Draves and Michelle Williams was 10th in 1:42.84.
Three Buckeyes also scored team points by swimming in consolation finals. Severn was 13th overall in the 400 individual medley in 4:14.26, Williams was 18th in the 100 butterfly in 55.00 and Detro was 15th in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.23.
Additionally, four Buckeyes – Phoebe Cater and Draves (100 fly), Anita Beck (200 free) and Moran (100 back) – earned a second swim of the day in the evening’s bonus finals.
The event continues Saturday with preliminary races beginning at 9 a.m. and evening finals set for 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the door of the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Updates from Oxford
The 17th annual Miami Invitational is taking place this weekend in Oxford, Ohio and about 15 Buckeyes are competing in the three-day event. Top finishers for the team Saturday included Libby Hunsche, who placed fourth in the 100 backstroke, Elisabeth Tavierne (fifth in the 100 back), and Jackie Brousseau (fifth in the 100 breaststroke).
