COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State advanced four individuals into a championship final or consolation final, plus two relays, at the first day of competition at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships that are being held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of The Ohio State University.
Senior captain Samantha Cheverton led the way – as she typically does in the major meets – with a thrilling third-place finish in the 500 freestyle. After just missing her own school record with her preliminary time of 4:42.76, she went 4:39.71 in the final to break the record by almost three seconds and earn the bronze medal.
“I’m really happy to break my own school record,” Cheverton said. “I was in Lane 3 so I could see my teammates on the side. I could see Coach waving his arms, so I knew I was having a good swim. I am really excited. It definitely shows there are good times to come with Big Tens later in the season.”
“Sam’s swim was significant,” Ohio State coach Bill Dorenkott said. “And, overall, I was pleased with how we raced against a great level of competition. We had a number of girls stand up and swim well.”
Senior Anita Beck swam a lifetime best of 4:51.50 in the 500 freestyle prelims, a time that placed her in the bonus final Thursday night. She then crushed her prelim best with a time of 4:48.77 with her evening swim.
Sophomore Angela Severn also swam two personal bests Thursday. She posted a 2:00.52 clocking in the 200 individual medley prelims to qualify for the consolation finals where she placed 8th in an even faster time of 2:00.22.
Sophomore Megan Detro was the fourth Buckeye to advance to an evening final. She placed 13th overall in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.76.
Ohio State’s 200 free relay team of Michelle Williams, Detro, Phoebe Cater and Kelsey Moran placed ninth in the time of 1:33.57. And the 400 medley relay team of Moran, Severn, Shannon Draves and Detro finished ninth in 3:41.41.
The event continues Friday with preliminary races beginning at 9 a.m. and evening finals set for 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the door of the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
