Ohio State Climbs to 18th in National Rankings – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are each rising in the national rankings. The men have climbed one spot and are now the highest ranked team from the Big Ten Conference at No. 7 nationally in the latest TYR/College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll. Ohio State’s women’s team has improved three places and is now ranked 18th nationally by the CSCAA.
The upward movement is not surprising. Both teams have been on a roll the past several years – the men are the defending Big Ten champions and the women are coming off a 13-year best fifth-place finish at the 2010 conference meet – and each has swam extremely well the first part of the 2010-11 season.
Coach Bill Wadley’s men’s team is 5-0 this season and is coming off a huge win over a 12-team field at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships that were contested at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Meanwhile, third-year coach Bill Dorenkott’s women’s team is also unbeaten at 4-0. The team was fifth among 15 teams at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships with only one other Big Ten team – Indiana – finishing ahead. The Buckeyes also have a fine performance at the Purdue Invite in their wake: a third-place effort in the eight-team field.

The teams are each about ready to begin holiday breaks. The women’s team will wrap up a week of spirited workouts at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion this weekend before the swimmers will head home for the holidays. The men, meanwhile, are in the midst of a week of heavy lifting in Florida before, also, heading home this weekend for the holidays. Here’s more good stuff on the teams:
Women…
- Buckeye women are ranked among the Big Ten’s Top 10 times in 16 different instances.
- Ohio State has multiple Top 10 times in four events, with three individuals among the Top 10 in the 100 butterfly (Shannon Draves, Michelle Williams and Phoebe Cater).
- Megan Detro has Top 5 times in three events. She is second in the 100 free, third in the 50 free and fifth in the 200 free.
- Samantha Cheverton has the fastest time in the 500 free (a school record 4:39.71 clocking) and the second fastest time in the 200 free (in another school record time of 1:45.62).
- Angela Severn has the third-fastest time in the 200 and 400 individual medleys, respectively.
- Diver Bianca Alvarez and Megan Detro have been honored as Big Ten Diver or Swimmer of the Week for their efforts this season.
Men…
- Buckeyes have the fastest time in the Big Ten in seven events: 50 free (Jason Schnur); 500 and 1,650 freestyles (Brent Hitchcock); 100 backstroke (Andrew Elliott); 100 and 200 breaststroke (Elliott Keefer); and the 200 individual medley (Justin Farra).
- Buckeyes have multiple Top 10 times in 13 of 14 events.
- Buckeyes with Top 5 times, in addition to those with the fastest times in the conference, include Lincoln Fahrbach (50 free), Stephen Sakaris (200 free), Ty Perkins (1,650 free), Andrew Elliott and Markus Sievers (200 backstroke), Justin Farra (100 and 200 breaststroke; 400 individual medley), Tim Phillips (100 butterfly), Quincy Lee (100 and 200 butterfly), Luke Stirton (200 fly) and Phil Seleskie (400 individual medley).
- Zach Holmes, Tim Phillips and Justin Farra have each been honored so far as Big Ten Conference Swimmers of the Week.
