Buckeyes to Compete at U.S. Short Course Nationals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 4-0 and 21st-ranked Ohio State women’s swimming team will feature 15 competitors this weekend, Dec. 2-4, at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships. The biggest USA Swimming meet of the winter season will take place at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
“The championships will feature a big collegiate field,” third-year coach Bill Dorenkott said. “Numerous Top 10 national teams will be here.
“This will be another opportunity to gain experience as a young team. We took a large group of swimmers to Irvine, Calif., this summer and any exposure to national or international competition is a good thing.”
Dorenkott was with 11 Ohio State swimmers in Irvine for the 2010 ConocoPhillips U.S. National Championships. The championships were the big event of the summer of 2010 with swimmers hoping to advance to compete in any number of events, including the 2010 Pan Pacific or Junior Pan Pacs championships, the 2010 Short Course World Championships or the 2011 World University Games.
Getting Psyched Four Buckeyes have top 16 times in nine different events and four relays boast top eight times heading into the meet. Ohio State’s 200 free relay has the second-fastest seed time and the 400 and 800 free relays are seeded sixth and third, respectively. Individually, senior Samantha Cheverton has the seventh-fastest seed time in three events – 200 free, 500 free and 200 backstroke – while Megan Detro (50 and 100 freestyle), Shannon Draves (100 and 200 butterfly) and Kelsey Moran (100 and 200 backstroke ) have multiple top 16 seeds.
Tickets Tickets are available at the main entrance to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. All session passes are $50 for adults and $35 for children and students with a valid college ID. Day passes, good for both the prelim and final sessions, are $15 and $10, respectively. Single session passes are $10 and $5, respectively.
Times Preliminary races start at 9 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday with finals beginning at 5 p.m. each evening.

Off to Oxford Assistant coach Stefanie Williams will take an 17 swimmers to Oxford, Ohio, and the campus of Miami University, for the Miami Invitational this weekend. The three-day invite will run Dec. 2-4 with preliminaries starting at 9 a.m. (Friday and Saturday only) and finals set for 6 p.m. each day. Live results are available here.
Divers in Action in Iowa Diving coach Vince Panzano and his diving teams will take part in the Hawkeye Invitational Friday through Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa. Women’s divers Bianca Alvarez and Kristen Asman and men’s divers Christian Holstein and Shane Miszkiel will be competing. Iowa just opened a new $69 million swimming, diving and recreation center in August: the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
Five Team Captains The Buckeyes are captained in the pool by five swimmers: seniors Anita Beck and Samantha Cheverton; junior Lisa Narum; and sophomores Emily Creran and Megan Detro.
Returning Scorers Ohio State is coming off its best finish at a Big Ten Championships – fifth – in 13 years. Leading returnees for the Buckeyes in the pool will be NCAA qualifiers Samantha Cheverton and Shannon Draves. The team also returns 12 individuals who scored points at the 2010 Big Ten championships, including multiple-event finalists Cheverton (200 back, 200 free and 500 free), Draves (100 and 200 butterfly) and Kelsey Moran (100 and 200 backstroke).
