Buckeyes Defeat Indiana, 3-1, Behind a Career-High 28 Digs From Sarah Mignin – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (18-7overall, 6-6 Big Ten) earned a split for the weekend with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-23) victory over Indiana (17-7, 5-7) Saturday night in St. John Arena. OSU’s Emily Danks posted a match-high 21 points with a career-high 21 kills (.302), two ace serves, a solo block and two assist blocks. Indiana’s Jordan Haverly recorded a team-high 17 points with 15 kills, one ace serve and two assist blocks.
Indiana broke a 2-2 tie in the first set with a three-point run starting with an OSU error, an Ashley Benson kill and a second Buckeye error to open a 5-2 lead. The Hoosiers held a five-point lead at 14-9 before a kill from Anna Szerszen and two from Danks cut the lead to 14-12. Two Ashley Benson kills and two IU errors made it 16-14. OSU tied the set at 16 with kills from Katie Dull and Danks. Indiana responded with the next five points to open a 21-16 lead. A Dull kill and Betsy Hone’s ace serve and kill made it 21-19. An OSU error and a Dull-Mariah Booth block made it 22-20. A Buckeye error and a block by Taylor Wittmer and Kelci Marschall made it set point for Indiana at 24-20. OSU stopped the set point with a kill from Booth at 24-21. Indiana won the set, 25-21 off an OSU error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Hoosiers hit .300 for the set to .167 for Ohio State.
Kills from Wittmer and Haverly, a Haverly ace serve and an OSU error opened set two for Indiana with a 4-0 lead. The Hoosiers held a 6-1 lead before kills from Danks and Szerszen made it 6-3. At 7-4, a Kelli Barhorst kill and an ace serve from Danks made it 7-6. Trailing, 11-10, OSU tied the set with a kill from Szerszen. A Dull kill and an IU error made it 13-11. With OSU leading, 15-13, Indiana used an Ivie Obeime kill and a Buckeye error to tie the set at 15. Kills from Barhorst and Benson made it 16-all. Kills from Amanda Peterson and Allie Schwarzwalder opened an 18-16 Ohio State lead. Haverly, with a kill, made it 18-17, OSU. An Indiana error and two kills from Schwarzwalder gave Ohio State a 21-17 lead. Two OSU errors cut the OSU lead to 21-19. Kills from Dull and Marschall moved the score to 22-20. An Indiana error and a Banks-Barhorst block made it 24-20 and set point for the Buckeyes. An IU error ended the set, 25-20, tying the match at one set each. Ohio State hit .419 for the set to .306 for the Hoosiers.
The third set saw seven lead changes and 12 ties. Indiana opened the set with a Marschall kill and an OSU error for a 2-0 lead. At 6-4, OSU kills from Barhorst and Schwarzwalder tied the set at six. A Haverly kill and an OSU error made it 8-6, Indiana. At 9-7, a kill from Danks and an IU error tied the set at nine. Indiana, with two OSU errors, took an 11-9 lead. Trailing, 13-11, a Szerszen kill and an IU error tied the set at 13. A kill from Dull and a Peterson-Barhorst block gave OSU a 15-13 lead. A kill by Haverly, an OSU error tied the set at 15. A Melanie Hicks ace serve made it 16-15, Indiana. Dull tied the set at 16 with a kill. The score advanced to 23-all where a Buckeye error gave Indiana set point at 24-23. A Szerszen kill tied the set at 24. A service ace from Szerszen gave OSU set point at 25-24. After an Indiana time out, a Dull kill ended the set at 26-24, OSU, giving the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .229 for the set to .111 for Indiana.
A solo block by Danks and a kill from Dull opened set four at 2-0 Ohio State. A Marschall kill made it 2-1. OSU took a 4-1 lead with a kill from Danks and a Schwarzwalder-Szerszen block. Two Buckeye errors and a Whitney Granado kill tied the set at four. At seven-all, kills from Barhorst and Dull gave Ohio State a 9-7 lead. At 12-10, an OSU error and a Marschall kill tied the set at 12. Four more ties made it 18-18. A Schwarzwalder solo block, a Dull kill and a kill from Schwarzwalder opened a 21-18 Ohio State lead. An OSU error and a kill from Haverly cut the Buckeye lead to one at 21-20. Kills from Hone and Granado moved the score to 22-21. A Szerszen kill and one from Benson made it 23-22, OSU. The Buckeye reached match point with a Szerszen kill at 24-22. A Buckeye error stopped the point at 24-23. Ohio State won the set, 25-23, with a kill from Szerszen to win the match, 3-1. The Buckeyes hit .340 for the set to .217 for Indiana.
For the match, Ohio State hit .284 to .223 for Indiana. The Buckeyes had a 66-52 advantage in kills and a 62-47 margin in assists. OSU’s Hone posted 30 assists with Peterson adding 27. IU’s Granado recorded 21 assists with Mary Chaudoin adding 16. The Buckeyes had a 4-3 margin in ace serves. OSU’s Danks recorded a match-high two aces. The Buckeyes gave up 12 service errors to 10 for the Hoosiers. Defensively, OSU had a 75-67 advantage in digs in the match. OSU’s Sarah Mignin collected a match and career-high 28 digs. IU’s Caitlin Cox posted a team-high 15 digs. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 9-3 margin in team blocks. Leading the match in blocks was OSU’s Schwarzwalder with four. She posted a solo and three assists.
Ohio State begins November with one of three road trips. The Buckeyes will play at Michigan State Friday at 6:30 p.m. and at Michigan Saturday at 6 p.m. The Big Ten Network will stream the match at Michigan State on the web and the Michigan match will be carried live by the Big Ten Network.
