COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming team opened its 2010-11 dual meet season with a 169.5-75.5 victory over Kenyon College Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Freshmen Kelly Ann Baird and Phoebe Cater kicked off their careers as Buckeyes winning two races each, while senior Anita Beck recorded two of her own.
The 200 medley relay team comprised of sophomores Kelsey Moran, Jackie Brousseau and Shannon Draves, and freshman Michelle Williams, won the first race of the season, starting a winning trend the Buckeyes continued throughout the meet against the Ladies from Kenyon, a Division III powerhouse.
“In the big scheme of things, it’s the first step in a long process – we’re preparing for February and March,” Ohio State head coach Bill Dorenkott said. “We talked about how it’s not the outcome, it’s the process. The more we can practice the process the better prepared we will be going forward.”
Ohio State’s freshmen class made a statement with a one-two finish in both the 200 freestyle with Baird and Williams and the 200 backstroke with Baird and Sarah Cruzan. Overall, freshmen accounted for five of Ohio State’s individual wins.
“We had an excellent week of preparation, Dorenkott said. Both (Cater and Baird) have been doing a great job in workouts, so I’m not surprised they were able to get it done out there today.”
Cater opened the second half of the meet with a close win over Kenyon’s Anna Connolly, building the Scarlet and Grey’s lead to 86.5-44. Beck recorded her second win of the day soon after in the 500 freestyle. The Buckeyes concluded the meet with Carter’s second win, in the 100 fly, and a win from junior Lisa Narum in the 200 IM.
In its next dual meet, Ohio State will host Denison and Cleveland State Friday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m in a co-ed, double dual meet with the men’s program at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
