Buckeyes Fall in Five Sets to Purdue – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio –The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (17-7 overall, 5-6 Big Ten) lost a 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 25-17, 15-11) decision Friday night to Purdue (15-7, 6-5) in St. John Arena. Boilermaker Anna Drewry posted a match-high 22 points with 19 kills (.600), two solo blocks and two assist blocks. Ohio State’s Emily Danks recorded a team-high 19.5 points with 16 kills (.289), one ace serve, a solo block and three assists.
Purdue broke a 1-1 tie in the first set with an OSU error and two kills from Tiffany Fisher to hold a 4-1 lead that they would not lose. A Jaclyn Hart kill gave Purdue set point at 24-18. A Boilermaker error made it 24-19. A Fisher kill ended the set at 25-19 to give Purdue a 1-0 lead in the match. The Boilermakers hit .205 for the set to .140 for Ohio State.
Set two saw 10 ties and four lead changes. Tied at four, a Drewry kill, a Fisher ace serve and a Drewry solo block gave Purdue a 7-4 lead. Trailing, 11-8, two kills from Anna Szerszen and one from Danks tied the set at 11. At 16-all, a block from Mariah Booth and Danks and kills from Booth and Danks gave OSU a 19-16 lead. At 23-21, a kill from Dull gave Ohio State set point at 24-21. A Fisher kill and an OSU error cut the lead to 24-23. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-23, with a Purdue error to tie the match at one each. Ohio State hit .342 in the set to .258 for the Boilermakers.
With the third set tied at five, two Purdue errors gave OSU a 7-5 lead. A Drewry kill made it 7-6. A Dull kill made it 8-6. Drewry, with a kill and a Kristen Arthurs block tied the set at eight. A kill and ace serve from Dull gave OSU a 10-8 lead. At 18-16, a kill from Dull and a Purdue error made it 20-16 OSU. An Arthurs kill and a Buckeye error cut the margin to 20-18. A Purdue error and a kill from Danks made it 22-18. An OSU error and a Betsy Hone kill made it 23-19. A second kill from Hone made it set point at 24-19. An Ariel Turner kill stopped the set point at 24-20. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-20, with a Kelli Barhorst kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .308 in the set to .243 for Purdue.
The fourth set opened with a Booth-Danks block and a solo block from Danks for a 2-0 lead. An OSU error and a kill from Szerszen made it 3-1. Two OSU errors tied the set at three. A Barhorst kill and a Buckeye error made it four-all. Purdue kills from Drewry and Fisher gave the Boilermakers a 6-4 lead. Trailing, 11-9, kills from Szerszen and Dull tied the set at 11. A five-point Purdue run began with a Hart kill, a Katie Griffin ace serve and a Hart-Fisher block as OSU called time out. The run continued with solo blocks from Drewry and Hart to make the lead 16-11. At 21-17, Purdue closed out the set with the final four points, winning the set, 25-17 with a kill from Hart. The Boilermakers hit .370 for the set to .250 for OSU.
Tied at one in the fifth set, Purdue used a 5-1 run to open a 6-2 lead. A kill from Booth and errors by both teams made it 7-4. A kill from Drewry made it 8-4. Two kills from Szerszen, and one each from Danks and Barhorst tied the set at eight. A Drewry kill and a Purdue error made it nine-all. An OSU error and a Catherine Rebarchak solo block forced an OSU time out at 11-9. Two Purdue blocks, the first from Arthurs and Rebarchak and the second from Drewry and Arthurs made it 13-9 with OSU calling time out. A Szerszen kill made it 13-10. A Buckeye error gave Purdue match point at 14-10. Barhorst stopped the point with a kill at 14-11. Arthurs, with a kill, closed out the set at 15-11 to give Purdue the 3-2 victory. The Boilermakers hit .286 for the set to .087 for OSU.
For the match, Purdue hit .261 to .234 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes had a 69-60 advantage in kills and a 64-56 margin in assists. OSU’s Hone posted a match and career-high 54 assists while Hart recorded 44 for Purdue. The Boilermakers had a 3-2 edge in ace serves while Ohio State had 14 service errors to four for Purdue. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 63-61 edge in digs with OSU’s Sarah Mignin recording a match and career-high 22. Purdue’s Carly Cramer recorded a team-high 16 digs for Purdue. At the net, the Boilermakers had a 12-6 advantage in team blocks. Purdue’s Drewry (two solos and two assist blocks) and OSU’s Danks (one solo, three assist blocks) shared match-high honors with four each.
Ohio State will host Indiana (17-6, 5-6) at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena.
