Three Buckeyes Alive in Singles, One Duo in Doubles at ITA Midwest Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team continued its play at the ITA/USTA Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday. Kara Cecil, Paloma Escobedo and Kelsey Haviland remained in main draw singles through the first two rounds while the doubles tandem of Haviland and Gabby Steele stayed alive in main draw doubles.
After a first-round bye, Escobedo downed Angelina Jogasuria of Akron in three sets, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4. Cecil advanced past Eastern Michigan’s Nino Mebuke in the first round, 6-4, 6-3, before upsetting Michigan’s Whitney Taney, a No. 5-8 seed, in the second round, 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (4). Escobedo and Cecil will meet Sunday in the third round.
Haviland also found herself on the winning end of an upset, knocking off Illinois’ Rachael White, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, after cruising past Youngstown State’s Margarita Sadovnikova, 6-4, 6-1. The Buckeye junior will face another ranked opponent in the third round in the form of Northwestern’s Kate Turvy, a No. 9-12 seed.
Cami Hubbs started strong against Kristin Rafael of Notre Dame, but Rafael outlasted Hubbs in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Steele advanced past Illinois’ Amy Allin in the first round, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, but couldn’t hold off No. 13-16 seed Katarina Milinkovic of DePaul in the second as Milinkovic won, 6-3, 6-2.
Noelle Malley battled against Michigan’s Brooke Bolender, but fell in two long sets, 7-5, 7-5.
The duo of Haviland and Steele is the lone Scarlet and Gray doubles tandem remaining in the tournament. The No. 9-12 seed tandem downed Bolender and Nguyen of Michigan, a No. 5-8 seed, in the third round, 8-2. The twosome will face off with the top-seeded duo of Frilling and Mathews of Notre Dame.
Escobedo and Hubbs fell to Notre Dame’s Rafael and Sanders in the third round, 8-6.
The championship match for doubles will be played Monday morning while singles wraps up Tuesday morning.
The Midwest Regional is a qualifier for the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The singles finalists and doubles champions from regionals across the country earn automatic bids into the tournament.
